IRONDEQUOIT, N.Y. — A widower in his late 70s cannot renew his driver’s license because of a speeding ticket from 47 years ago.
Gary Miller went to renew his New York license weeks before it expired but was denied. The system found a speeding ticket from New Jersey on his Pennsylvania license in 1979.
“This must have come as quite a shock to you,” News10NBC Chief Investigative Reporter Berkeley Brean asked.
“Oh yes,” Miller said.
This problem happens at least once a week
This is a problem that happens at least once a week across New York. When drivers try to renew their license, the new state DMV software is immediately finding old tickets in other states that drivers forgot or didn’t know about. Until drivers fix those tickets, New York won’t budge.
Two decades ago, Teri Oliver had her Florida license revoked for medical reasons. It resurfaced when she tried to renew her New York license last month.
“It’s ridiculous to be going through this now after 20 years,” Oliver said.
The system found a New Jersey speeding ticket against James Williams. It’s so far back, it happened when he was 8.
“They sent me a letter back saying it was denied because I owe outstanding tickets in New Jersey,” Williams said.
Williams and Oliver are still trying to clear it up.Oliver says Florida told her it was lift the revocation by last Friday but that would only allow her to drive in Florida. Florida is still doing its full review of her case.
Monroe County Clerk Jamie Romeo says this happens at least once a week, and the local DMV offices can’t make exceptions.
“Unfortunately there is no wider resolution. It’s still really a case by case basis,” Romeo said.
The state’s position
The state’s position is the drivers are out of compliance so the drivers need to fix the ticket. But that means searching for tickets filed away 20 to 50 years ago.
Miller showed Brean what he and other drivers are up against. He called the number he was told to call in Pennsylvania. At least this time, someone answered. They sent him a form to sign and send back so they can search their archives.
“So that’s the kind of conversation you’ve had for…” Brean asked.
“Two weeks,” Miller said.
His license expired last week.
“I’m dead in the water. I’m a widower that lives alone. I’m 78 years old. And I kind of need my license to get to the grocery store. It’s a long walk,” Miller said.
At 3:30 p.m. Monday, Miller said the DMV in Pennsylvania had his signed form and was looking into his case. The best advice is that if you’ve had a driver’s license in another state, it’s probably a good idea to come to a DMV office and have them check to see if there are any outstanding tickets from other states before you get close to the deadline of renewing your license.
