UEFA Champions League Semi-Finals: Opta Supercomputer Predictions Ahead of Second Legs

After some vintage UEFA Champions League action last week, we’re back to do it all over again. But who of Paris Saint-Germain, Bayern Munich, Arsenal and Atlético Madrid will progress to the final? And who will go on to win the whole thing? We check in with the Opta supercomputer for the latest predictions.

We hoped the UEFA Champions League semi-finals would deliver, and at the halfway stage, we have not been left disappointed.

Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich more than lived up to the billing in their first leg in France last week, playing out a stunning nine-goal thriller as the defending champions edged a pleasantly exhausting game 5-4.

It was an instant classic at the Parc des Princes, with Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Ousmane Dembélé scoring a brace each along with a João Neves header for the defending champions. Harry Kane, Michael Olise, Dayot Upamecano and Luis Díaz found the net for Bayern in a truly stunning encounter, and it would not be a surprise to see another high-scoring affair in the second leg in Germany on Wednesday.

Before that, Arsenal host Atlético Madrid after a 1-1 draw in Spain in the first leg. A penalty each from Viktor Gyökeres and Julián Álvarez meant both teams had to settle for a draw, though Arsenal were left incensed when a decision to award another penalty for an apparent foul on Eberechi Eze was overturned after a VAR review.

With both ties finely poised, we thought we’d check in with the Opta supercomputer to ask which team is now seen as likeliest to win this season’s Champions League.

Bayern Munich were narrow tournament favourites ahead of last week’s first legs, but unsurprisingly, that is no longer the case after they were the only team to lose.

It is Arsenal who have wrestled their favourites tag back. The Gunners are given a 68.1% chance of reaching the final, and a 35.8% likelihood of lifting their first ever European Cup/Champions League.

It should be said that this will likely change if Bayern get through, as the Germans still top the Opta Power Rankings. The fact they trail PSG in their semi means their chances of reaching the final are lower than they were last week, though.

Bayern were able to overcome Luis Enrique’s men in 42.2% of the supercomputer’s simulations, but PSG finished the job at the Allianz Arena to advance to a second consecutive final in the other 57.8%.

That means PSG are second favourites to win the Champions League, doing so in 28.6% of sims.

Atlético cannot be counted out of things, having eliminated Barcelona in the quarter-finals in impressive fashion. However, the supercomputer is not exactly effusive in backing Diego Simeone’s men. They did reached the final in 31.9% of sims, but only won the whole thing in 12.1%.
