Meeting on sale of former School No. 20 (Tuesday)
Rochester City Council member Michael Patterson will hold the second and final hearing on Tuesday about the proposed sale of the former RCSD School 20.
It’s happening at Rochester City Hall at 6 p.m., after the city council committee meetings. Patterson says he’s trying to get the public’s feedback on the proposed sale of the school building and the plans for other unused RCSD properties in the city.
The proposal calls for selling the old Henry Lomb School on Oakman Street, which closed six years ago, to the Young Women’s College Prep Charter School. If the sale is approved, the charter school plans to move all staff, students, and operations from its Hoover Drive location to the building on Oakman Street.
Patterson and some other city council members support the sale of the old school building to the charter school. However, in a vote to sell a separate school building to the Rochester Academy of Science charter school, council members Mary Lupien and Stanley Martin said they’d rather see that building turned into housing.
National Day of Prayer (Thursday)
People are set to gather at Rochester City Hall on State Street and the Monroe County Office Building on West Main Street on Thursday to form a human prayer chain.
Thursday marks the National Day of Prayer. County Executive Adam Bello, Mayor Malik Evans, local clergy, and ministries across the region are set to take part in the celebration of prayer and unity. The morning prayer at Rochester City Hall runs from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. There will also be events on Friday and Saturday. You can learn more here.
Lilac Festival begins (Friday)
Highland Park will once again be full of live music, food, games, and the fragrant scents of lilacs. The 128th annual Lilac Festival kicks off on Friday and runs for the next 10 days.
This year’s festival will feature some nationally touring artists as headliners at the KeyBank Center Stage and plenty of other supporting acts each day. The festival will also feature the Lilac Parade, Art in the Park, Small Business Circle, Senior Day, and vendors. The annual Lilac 5K and 10K will once again take place on the final day, Sunday, May 17.
This year, the lilac festival was voted as the country’s second-best flower festival in a USA Today readers’ choice poll. The Lilac Festival typically draws over 500,000 visitors. You can see what’s been announced of the schedule so far here.
The festival started with a local horticulturist, John Dunbar, planting lilacs in Highland Park and thousands of people showing up to see them. It features the most extensive lilac collection in the northeast.
Concert at the Monroe County Jail (Friday)
Students from the Eastman School of Music will perform for inmates at the Monroe County Jail on Friday. The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office said several inmates have been taking weekly music classes with students as part of a pilot program.
Part of that program included inmates learning to write their own music pieces. The Eastman students will play that music during the concert. The last concert at the jail was in 2024.
Last year, the Lilac Festival drew over 500,000 visitors. It runs for 10 days in a row, filling Highland Park with the fragrant scents of lilacs, music, food, and games.
