Ever since Greta Gerwig turned Barbie into an Oscar-nominated, box office sensation, film fans have been desperate to see her next project – but it looks like we're going to have to wait a little while longer for her upcoming Narnia film.
Netflix has confirmed that Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew – which the streamer is calling "an epic adventure" – will now be released in cinemas around the world on 12 February 2027, before arriving on streaming on 2 April.
That's a fair bit later than the original release date, with the previous plan having been a theatrical opening on Thanksgiving this November ahead of a Netflix debut on Christmas Day.
It's worth noting that the new plan, which also includes an IMAX release, means that the film will have the longest exclusive cinema run of any Netflix feature, suggesting the streamer may be making a new commitment to theatrical distribution.
The Magician's Nephew is based on the sixth published novel in CS Lewis's legendary book series, though the events of the novel take place first in the chronological timeline making this an "origin story for Narnia."
Written and directed by Gerwig, the film's cast sees newcomers David McKenna and Beatrice Campbell join an all-star ensemble that includes Emma Mackey, Carey Mulligan, Daniel Craig and Meryl Streep – the latter as the voice of Aslan.
Speaking about the new release date, Gerwig said that "Working with Netflix to bring this film to life has been extraordinary and IMAX continues to be an incredible partner", adding that "I cannot wait for people to see the film in theatres on February 12 and on Netflix on April 2."
She continued: "I was a child when I first read The Magician’s Nephew, and I fell in love with the gorgeously improbable but completely brilliant concept of a cosmic lion singing the world of Narnia to life.
"I didn’t know that I would grow up to make films, but a universe built out of music is an idea that always lived in my heart. It is the honor of a lifetime to be asked to imagine it into being."
Gerwig also said that it was because of The Chronicles of Narnia, that she "believed in magic and hidden worlds and adventure" and that she "believed that anywhere could be enchanted and that anyone could be swept up into an epic."
Meanwhile, a statement from the CS Lewis company said that it had been "incredibly moving to see how deeply Greta Gerwig has embraced CS Lewis’s world, and infused Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew with joy, heart, and genuine love for the story."
The Magician's Nephew will be released in cinemas on 12 February 2027 and on Netflix on 2 April 2027.
