British Jews facing ‘greatest ever threat’, says Met chief

British Jews are facing their “greatest ever threat”, driven by overlapping extremism, online radicalisation and hate crime, Met Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley said.

He also warned of a “pandemic of antisemitism” linked to international conflicts, and raised concerns about large-scale protests planned over the Bank Holiday weekend.

Sir Mark told the Times: “Jews are on everybody’s list, all of those hateful groups.

“Whether you’re extreme right, whether you’re extreme left, whether you’re Islamist terrorist, whether you’re right-wing terrorist, and some hostile states as well now with some sort of Iranian-related threats. There’s a ghastly Venn diagram that they’re at the middle of.”

Earlier, the Director of Public Prosecutions warned of a “deeply troubling rise” in antisemitic incidents across the country, as prosecutors face increasing numbers of hate crime cases and recent attacks targeting Jewish communities.

He vowed to use the “full force of the law” against perpetrators, including through aggravated charges and terrorism legislation where appropriate.

Sir Mark says “non-traditional sources” are normalising antisemitism

The “social media-led” news ecosystem has led more people to source their views from “non-traditional sources”, Sir Mark said, warning that antisemitism is becoming “increasingly mainstreamed”.

He said social media is accelerating the spread of extremist ideas by enabling misinformation, conspiracy theories and hate speech to circulate more widely and rapidly than before.

Algorithms can amplify emotionally charged or polarising content, exposing users to unverified sources and antisemitic narratives.

What authorities are doing to protect the community

Sir Mark has also asked the Prime Minister to urgently approve funding for nearly 300 additional officers, including firearms-trained units, to protect Jewish communities.

The Metropolitan Police says it wants additional resources to increase visible policing in areas with large Jewish populations, particularly in north-west London.

Counter-terrorism units are also involved where incidents meet the threshold for extremist or terrorism-related investigation. Officers are working with community organisations to improve reporting and reassurance.

The Met Commissioner warned the current model – redeploying officers from across London – is unsustainable, especially after the Golders Green stabbing of two Jewish men.

Suspect Essa Suleiman appeared in court on Friday charged with three counts of attempted murder, including of his own friend before allegedly stabbing two Jewish men, Shloime Rand, 34, and Norman Shine, 76.

Suleiman reportedly has a history of serious violence and was recently released from psychiatric care. He was born in Somalia and came to the UK legally as a child in the 1990s. He is in custody until the next hearing at the Old Bailey on May 15.

The UK terrorism threat level was raised to “severe” by the Joint Terrorism Analysis Centre, meaning a terror attack is “highly likely”, following the Golders Green attack.

Why are police saying Jews are at higher risk now?

Police assessments reflect a rise in both the frequency and visibility of antisemitic incidents, alongside heightened tensions linked to international events.

Officers say Jewish communities are being disproportionately targeted in hate crime and intimidation, particularly in areas where political conflict abroad is being reflected in domestic protests and online activity.

The concern is not just isolated attacks, but a broader environment in which hostility can escalate more quickly.
