Similar to yesterday, a large number of NC State players have scratched out of their events, with Daniel Diehl, the highest-ranked among them. Diehl, who just finished up his junior year season at NCAAs, was the 3rd seed in the 200 back as well as the 6th seed in the 200 free. He’s not the lone 3rd seed to drop an event, as his teammate Leah Shackley has dropped the 50 fly. The NC State product also dropped the 200 back, where she was seeded 5th. Joining her in dropping the 200 back are her training partners Rhyan White and Kennedy Noble. The pair were seeded 4th and 6th in the event, respectively.
The number of highly seeded scratches is not unexpected, as the Fort Lauderdale Open coincides with the final exams at many colleges and universities. Like yesterday, UVA’s Thomas Heilman and Max Williamson have scratched their events.
Not everyone, however, has scratched their events due to school. Katie Grimes and Emma Weyant have both dropped the 200 free in favor of the 400 IM, where they are the top two seeds. Carson Foster, too, has done something similar, pulling out of the 200 back in favor of the 400 IM, where he is the 2nd seed. Foster was the 5th seed in the 200 back, an event that saw both the 3rd seed Diehl, as well as the 4th seed David King, withdraw. Harvard first-year William Mulgrew, the winner of the 1500 on day 1 and last night’s runner-up in the 400, has taken a day off. The Shawmut Aquatic Club swimmer was the 43rd seed in the 200 free and 12th seed in the 400 IM.
