A shocking report has emerged involving the Sri Lankan cricket team. Two U-19 cricketers of Sri Lanka are alleged to have filmed people bathing in a hotel in Colombo. Based on a complaint filed by a woman, the police arrested both of the U-19 cricketers. Later, they were released on a personal bail of LKR 500,000 (approx $1,564).
However, the investigation is still underway. According to the latest reports, police are investigating whether the young cricketers shared any of those videos online, which they recorded with their mobile phones. The players will have to be in court on May 25 for the next hearing of the case.
"Two Sri Lankan Under-19 men's cricketers have been arrested over allegations of filming people bathing in the hotel where the players were staying, in Narahenpita, Colombo. Both players have since been released on a personal bail of LKR 500,000 (approx $1,564),” ESPN mentioned in their report.
“The cricketers had been arrested earlier this week after women staying at the hotel had complained that they were being filmed using mobile phones, while in their bathrooms. Sri Lankan police told ESPNcricinfo that Narahenpita police are currently investigating whether any of these videos have been shared online. Having been produced at the Aluthkade Magistrate's Court for their initial hearing, the players are next due back in court on May 25. SLC has not announced any disciplinary measures of its own,” it further added.
Mass resignation put SLC in jeopardy
The report came at a moment when Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) itself was in jeopardy for over 48 hours, because of a mass resignation of the office executives, including the president of the board. Because of rising allegations of corruption, the top officials of SLC, including the president himself, resigned from their respective designations. A new committee of executives and officials is yet to be announced.
“The President of Sri Lanka Cricket, Mr. Shammi Silva, has tendered his resignation from the post, effective today. Along with him, the office bearers and members of the Executive Committee of the SLC have also submitted their resignations,” the official statement released by the board reads.
“This decision has been formally communicated to His Excellency President Anura Kumara Dissanayake and the Honorable Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports, Mr. Sunil Kumara Gamage,” it added.
Why did the president resign?
Shammi Silva met with the country's president, Anura Kumara Dissanayake, to discuss the situation and the mounting pressure they had been carrying for a long time. It was believed that at the request of the country's president, Silva and his colleagues decided to quit their jobs on the board.
Currently, to deal with the unique situation, a new 'Transformation Committee' has been formed. According to several media reports, the newly formed committee will be led by MP Eran Wickramaratne and include well-known cricket figures like Kumar Sangakkara and Roshan Mahanama.
