Critically-Acclaimed Netflix Royal Family Series Is Getting a Prequel Spin-Off

Netflix's The Crown followed 58 years of Queen Elizabeth II's more than 70 year reign. Beginning right at the start with the wedding of Princess Elizabeth and Philip Mountbatten in 1947 and ending with the 2005 wedding of Prince Charles and Camilla Parker Bowles, The Crown has received critical acclaim for its performances, writing, and production value despite historical inaccuracies being pointed out in some of the plot lines.

The series finale aired in 2023, and Netflix was already in talks for a spin-off with Left Bank Pictures. The deal (for a reported $676 million) was highly anticipated given the wild popularity of the original series. As of April 30th, 2026, the prequel was reportedly given a green light, with the original creator, Peter Morgan, returning to run the show.

The prequel will reportedly span over the previous 50 years leading up to the first episode of the original series. Leading with the death of Queen Victoria in 1901, the series will also reportedly cover the reigns of the four kings who all reigned during that period—Edward VII, George V, Edward VIII, and George VI. Queen Elizabeth II would likely appear at some point during her grandfather, George V's, reign. Additionally, the timeline of the prequel would cover incredibly turbulent times in history including both World Wars, the establishment of the House of Windsor in 1917, and the abdication crisis of 1936.

Even though fans may have hinted that they'd devour a Meghan Markle and Prince Harry or more modern season, creator Peter Morgan has long said he prefers to look at the past rather than stories that are still unfolding: “I sort of have in my head a 20-year rule. That is enough time and enough distance to really understand something, to understand its role, to understand its position, to understand its relevance. Often things that appear absolutely wildly important today are instantly forgotten, and other things have a habit of sticking around and proving to be historically very relevant and long-lasting.”

Fans and critics alike loved the original series of The Crown, which won 24 Primetime Emmys and eight Golden Globes over the course of its six-series run. This coupled with the fascination of the British Royal Family makes a continuation of the series one people are hungry for.
