Anne Frank was a writer and symbol of strength and resilience.
On Friday, “Anne Frank The Exhibition” opens at the Griffin Museum of Science and Industry. The MSI is the first museum in the Midwest to present this exhibit, and Chicago is only the second U.S. city to host this experience, featuring never-before-seen artifacts from Anne Frank’s life.
“The story of Anne Frank is powerful. It’s a lesson about history. It’s also very much a lesson from history,” said Ronald Leopold, executive director of the Anne Frank House. “It speaks to the human mind, that it is capable of wonderful things, but it also has dark corners. This exhibition is about one of those dark corners. It’s about antisemitism, about racism, about discrimination. We brought over 100 artifacts from our collection in Amsterdam, very personal items, each item telling a story.”
Visitors will get to step inside a full-scale recreation of the annex where Anne and her family were forced into hiding.
“From the very beginning, we knew that we must do something very different from Amsterdam to achieve the same kind of experience. And the main difference between Amsterdam and the exhibition here in Chicago is the fact that Amsterdam is all about emptiness, all about absence. However, here in Chicago, what you will see is a meticulously recreated hiding place, but furnished. It feels like they’ve just left.”
The Griffin Museum of Science and Industry is the first major museum to host the exhibit.
“This exhibition is a story, a young girl’s story of her horrific situation, but she still found resilience, creativity, curiosity and hope in her writing, and we are humbled to be able to tell Anne’s story,” said Dr. Chevy Humphrey, president and CEO of the Griffin Museum of Science and Industry.
“Because we are on the South Side of Chicago, and a lot of families will probably never be able to go to Amsterdam to see the house, we want to make sure they have the equitable experiences as everyone else, and they can learn about history. Because if you don’t know about history, how can you shape a better future?”
Children who come to the museum on field trips with their school will get a copy of their own journal so they can discover the power of their voice.
“What we hope visitors will take away from this exhibition is, of course, first to remember Anne Frank, to remember the fact that she and 1.5 million Jewish children were murdered for the single reason that they were Jewish,” Leopold said. “We hope visitors take away from this exhibit that they can help eradicate not just antisemitism, but racism, hate in all its forms.”
