The Minnesota Vikings are finally starting to begin sorting through their general manager options.
No, seriously. They are only now getting to the part of the offseason where they are looking for a lead executive.
Here is the announcement (via Twitter/X) from the team’s owners, Mark and Zygi Wilf, as the Minnesota Vikings’ search for a new general manager is officially underway:
“With the conclusion of the 2026 NFL Draft, our search for the next general manager of the Minnesota Vikings is underway,” the Wilfs said in a statement. “This will be a thorough and deliberate process led by ownership, with support from a small internal advisory committee of senior leaders. We have also engaged respected firm TurnkeyZRG to assist in conducting a wide-ranging search that includes experienced football executives, emerging candidates, and individuals with diverse professional backgrounds. Our focus is to identify a decisive leader with a clear vision for team building, strong communication skills, and the ability to build alignment across an organization.
Out of respect for all involved, we do not intend to publicly announce candidates and will provide further comment when the search is complete.”
In case you turned your football brain off after the Bears’ elimination from the postseason, the Vikings removed Kwesi Adofo-Mensah from his general manager’s post during Senior Bowl Week. The move came less than a year after the Vikings gave Adofo-Mensah a multi-year extension that I thought would keep him in Minnesota for a while. But watching the team go from 14 wins to 9 as the team watched 2024 first-round pick quarterback J.J. McCarthy struggle — all while former QB1 Sam Darnold was leading the Seattle Seahawks to Super Bowl glory — makes me understand why the Vikings made that decision.

Before the kickoff of the 2025 season, the Vikings were 34-17 during Kwesi Adofo-Mensah’s time as general manager. The team even made two postseason appearances, but their Super Bowl aspirations were dashed in short order in both of those seasons. And yet, despite the success, it makes sense why Minnesota parted ways with how things ended last year and how things were looking to go had J.J. McCarthy been given a clear path to a second season as a starter. With that being said, it doesn’t make much sense to me to wait until *AFTER THE DRAFT* to start your GM search.
Since dismissing Adofo-Mensah in January, the Vikings have made several notable transactions. They signed a new quarterback, cut some key players, traded away a 2024 Pro Bowl edge defender, and drafted a fresh class of rookies. You’d think that an ownership group would want their general manager in place for these potentially franchise-altering decisions. Maybe the powers that be in Minnesota believe that not having a GM in charge would make better draft decisions than the guy the team just dumped. That would be a shot to the ol’ ego.
As for who could be in the running for the gig, The Athletic’s Alec Lewis shares a list of 14 likely candidates. The list includes the team’s interim GM (Rob Brzezinski) and one name (Colts Assistant GM Ed Dodds) that Bears fans might be familiar with from their favorite team’s most recent search for a new general manager. No matter how the cookie crumbles, I hope the net result of this process is that the Vikings continue to fall behind Chicago and the rest of the NFC North.
