Six Flags Great America is now officially open for the 2026 season, and the park quietly made a big change to one of its policies.
The park, in suburban Gurnee, has a number of policies and codes of conduct listed online, including dress codes, behavior policies, and special notices to parents and guardians. It also has a large banner at the top of its site that says “Chaperone Policy In Effect.”
“Because Six Flags is a family park, we expect guests to behave appropriately,” the page says. “Violating our park policies may be cause for ejection from the park without refund.”
In previous years, the park’s chaperone policy said guests 15 and younger must be accompanied by a parent, guardian or adult chaperone who is at least 21 years old, starting at 5 p.m. This year, that’s no longer the case, a spokesperson said.
“As part of our ongoing policy evaluations, and considering trends across major entertainment venues, the chaperone policy will be in effect beginning at park opening, rather than 5 p.m.,” the spokesperson said.
That means the policy is in effect all day, starting at 10:30 a.m.
The chaperone, the park said, must present a valid photo ID with date of birth listed when entering the park. They can supervise up to 10 guests, the park said, and must remain with their group at all times.
“Any guest 15-years-old or younger found inside the park without a qualifying chaperone when the policy is active will be immediately subject to removal from the park,” the policy states. “This requirement applies to all guests, including ticket holders and all Season Pass and Membership holders.”
The policy goes on to say that guests can expect to see Great America and Hurricane Harbor Chicago security staff utilizing both surveillance and body-worn cameras throughout the park.
“We appreciate your cooperation and partnership in helping us maintain a safe, enjoyable experience for all guests,” the policy says.
In addition to the chaperone policy, the park also enforces a dress code that says certain clothing could result in “refusal of admission or removal from the park,” including clothing and tattoos with hateful, vulgar or discriminatory language or symbols; clothing that internationally exposes “excessive” portions of skin; clothing that drags on the ground and more.
“Six Flags Great America reserves the right to deny admission to or remove anyone whose attire does not comply with the Guest Dress Code or could detract from the experience of other guests, if the guest refuses all reasonable option,” the policy says.
