While the film was technically a commercial success by most standards earning $44 million upon its international theatrical release, the number was significantly lower compared to other films of the time. Additionally, the movie cost over $25 million to produce making it barely break even against that and marketing costs according to Screenrant. Ticket sales for The Last Emperor are credited to its critical acclaim and Academy Award nominations, resulting in making movie goers curious to see it ahead of the ceremony.

The Last Emperorreceived nine Academy Award nominations and would go on to win all of them including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Adapted Screenplay at the 60th ceremony in 1988. The film also won four Golden Globes, three BAFTAs, and the Grammy award for Best Album Written for a Movie. If not for the increase in interest for the film due to critics and other accolades, The Last Emperor would have been alongside The English Patient, Amadeus, and The Hurt Locker as the only Best Picture winners to not enter the weekend box office top five.

The late Roger Ebert was notably a fan of the film saying in his four out of four review at the time, "In the case of 'The Last Emperor' the narrative cannot be separated from the awesome presence of the Forbidden City, and from Bertolucci's astonishing use of locations, authentic costumes, and thousands of extras to create the everyday reality of this strange little boy."
