The super late-night games are over for a while, which is very nice …

When the game is tied and there are runners on base, is there any Cub you want up there right now more than Nico Hoerner?

    — Marquee Sports Network (@WatchMarquee) April 29, 2026 I mean, I suppose you could argue there are some Cubs hitters who are actually putting up better numbers than Hoerner this season, including with runners in scoring position (believe it or not, Moises Ballesteros, Carson Kelly, and Pete Crow-Armstrong(!) all have better RISP numbers than Hoerner this year). But there’s just a feeling there that the guy most likely to come through right now is Nico Hoerner. He certainly did last night. A little history for Nico, too:

Nico Hoerner's 2-run double in the 6th inning makes him only the second Cubs hitter on record with 25+ RBI and 35+ hits in a March-April period. Derrek Lee also achieved the feat in his incredible 2005 campaign.

    I am about to tell you something unbelievable, but true.With runners in scoring position this year:Nico Hoerner – .289/.341/.447/118 wRC+Pete Crow-Armstrong – .333/.421/.455/148 wRC+

    — Brett Taylor (@Brett_A_Taylor) April 29, 2026 PCA getting love from Alex Bregman and Craig Counsell:

"It's a huge swing. Just changes the game … to go from a 2-run lead to a 5-run lead, that changes everything."Craig Counsell on PCA's 3-run home run ? pic.twitter.com/GHqwyJ5G5w

    — Marquee Sports Network (@WatchMarquee) April 29, 2026 Meanwhile, the game was a big milestone win for Counsell:

    Cheers to Craig! pic.twitter.com/5kVkTKLBnp

    — Chicago Cubs (@Cubs) April 29, 2026

Craig Counsell had Malort to celebrate 900 career wins. #Cubs

    — Taylor McGregor (@Taylor_McGregor) April 29, 2026 21.4% of those wins have come as the manager of the Cubs, if you were curious. It’ll take another 470 or so for him to have won more games with the Cubs than with the Brewers. Seiya Suzuki has made some really nice plays out in right field already this year, despite the knee injury in the WBC.

    GOODNESS, SEIYA. pic.twitter.com/NKDyNAyBK6

    — Chicago Cubs (@Cubs) April 29, 2026 The injuries keep piling up for the pitching staff, with the sting felt acutely in the bullpen, but they can keep on finding success. It was 3.1 perfect innings from Hoby Milner and Ryan Rolison in a game where the bullpen took over when the tying run was on third base. Milner is a long-time MLB veteran in the middle innings, but Rolison has had an exceptionally long journey of trying to make it in the big leagues, then trying to hang onto a 40-man roster spot, then bounce around among organizations this offseason, and then kinda sitting as an emergency man in the Cubs bullpen and not getting a look until there was no other choice. If he were to step up and become a regular contributor, that’d be quite a feather in his and the Cubs’ caps. Maybe he can be the left-handed version of Ben Brown, each throwing multiple innings each time they appear. This is a pretty notable point from Craig Counsell, because this was an open question at the start of the year:

How often will we see Moises Ballesteros catching for the Cubs?Craig Counsell: "It's not something you're going to see a lot in our current roster construction, but if something happens to one of our catchers, then you're going to absolutely see it a lot more." pic.twitter.com/v1f6N3McwL

    — 104.3 The Score (@thescorechicago) April 28, 2026 Typically/historically, one of your two primary catchers will be injured at some point. Until and unless the Cubs were sure Ballesteros could handle part-time catching duties for a few weeks, they were going to have to bring up a minor league veteran to handle the back-up job in such a situation. Now, Counsell is indicating that wouldn’t be the case. Which is huge. Edward Cabrera also had another successful start overall (including 20 whiffs), and the key is the shorts:

"I told him I would give him (a pair of shorts) so we could twin."Edward Cabrera says it's a rule for Tommy Hottovy to wear shorts after his starts ? pic.twitter.com/HJJHFE3Acl

    — Marquee Sports Network (@WatchMarquee) April 29, 2026 The more we hear about Tatsuya Imai’s tough adjustment to the U.S./MLB, the more I think about how valuable it is that the Cubs have developed some expertise in those transitions:

With Tatsuya Imai's struggling to acclimate in Houston, we decided to look into the ecosystem in place to support Japanese and Korean pros jumping to MLB.How can MLB clubs help ease that transition? Here's that story, with @SamBlum3 (free link): t.co/I1f5jnRQOM pic.twitter.com/4Tv5NLOIfx

    — Stephen J. Nesbitt (@stephenjnesbitt) April 28, 2026 The Astros should probably just let Imai join the Cubs now. Also, the Cubs will ABSOLUTELY need to bring in another Japanese player or two after this season to keep up the pipeline, the expertise, and the institutional knowledge. It’s really important to the org. An awful moment for Javy Báez, who is hopefully not as injured as it looked:

    — Talkin' Baseball (@TalkinBaseball_) April 29, 2026 It looked like Javy wasn’t so much trying to slide as just to avoid the first baseman. Unfortunately the timing of his maneuver meant some extremely awkward contact with the base and the ground. The restraint the catcher showed in not immediately … eh hem … returning the bat to the batter. Guy is a saint:
