Oscar Piastri has peeled back the curtain on his relationship with McLaren teammate Lando Norris, and revealed how their seemingly clean, professional duel for the world title in 2025 could have easily turned into something far messier.
Piastri’s campaign last year was nothing short of electric. While others scrambled for rhythm, the Australian found harmony early, dancing in sync with the MCL39 and building a commanding lead before the summer break.
By the time Formula 1 reconvened, he sat 32 points clear – a statement reinforced by a clinical win in Zandvoort while his teammate Lando Norris fell by the wayside.
But momentum in Formula 1 is as slippery as oil on tarmac.
Norris clawed his way back into contention, race by race, until the title fight went down to the wire in Abu Dhabi. There, the Brit completed his comeback, snatching the championship as Piastri slipped to third behind Max Verstappen.
On paper, it was a fierce but fair duel. In reality? There were sparks.
Canada saw Norris misjudge a move and collide with Piastri, eliminating himself in a moment of frustration. Singapore added another flashpoint, with the pair tangling at the start. The paddock chatter grew louder: was this a rivalry about to explode?
“It could have gotten nasty”
Piastri, however, tells a more measured story – one of tension carefully contained.
“We get asked about our relationship as teammates quite a lot,” he said, speaking on the High Performance podcast.
“And I think probably it was actually better at the back end of last year than it was, you know, say, the first six months that we were getting to know each other, just because we know each other more. And we spend so much time around one another every year.
“So it really didn’t change much.”
That might surprise those expecting frostiness behind closed doors. But Piastri insists both drivers understood the stakes – and the limits.
“Because I think we both knew the situation we were in of trying to beat each other and only one of us could win. We knew all of that. But it never, it never got nasty,” he added.
And yet, the possibility lingered.
“I think that’s a really important thing, because I think it would have been very easy for last year to have got nasty.
“And well, there would have probably been, if it really got bad, the question of whether one of us was even sat here doing this interview wearing orange.”
That’s not just a throwaway line – it’s a glimpse into how fragile team harmony can be when two elite drivers are chasing the same crown. Careers, contracts, and reputations can pivot on a single incident.
Walking the tightrope
What makes McLaren’s internal battle remarkable isn’t just that it stayed civil – it’s how.
In Formula 1, information is power. Data, setup tweaks, driving techniques – these are the secrets that can decide championships. And often, when tensions rise, that flow of information dries up.
Not here.
“You can’t hide, and it goes the opposite way as well,” Piastri explained.
“You know if you’re in that position where someone else has done something and you go, I need to work out how to do that, you want as many tools at your disposal as you can get.
“So, yeah, I think everyone probably has their little moments where they go, ‘OK I want to keep that one to myself’, but at the end of the day, if you start going down that route, eventually it’ll bite you when you probably the least want it.”
It’s a candid admission: even in a respectful rivalry, temptation exists. But crossing that line carries consequences – not just for individuals, but for the entire team.
Now, as Formula 1 resumes its season in Miami, Piastri returns with momentum on his side after a strong second-place finish in Suzuka. McLaren, resurgent and ambitious, is once again knocking at the door.
But the bigger question lingers: if the same two drivers find themselves locked in another title fight, can lightning strike twice without igniting a storm?
Last year, they walked the tightrope – and didn’t fall. Next time, the wind might be stronger.
