Shai Gilgeous-Alexander of the Thunder and Dillon Brooks of the Suns go way back, so after Oklahoma City swept Phoenix out of the playoffs on Monday, Gilgeous-Alexander just had to get one more poke in.
“SGA” posted a series of photographs and videos on Instagram with the caption, “everybody wants to be villainous until the brooms come out & the dust settles & you realize who the villain is.” It was a play on words using Brooks’ nickname, “Villain.”
One of the photos showed Gilgeous-Alexander facing the camera with Brooks’ back turned. Unfortunately in this case for Brooks, he wears the No. 3, and the photo displayed “Cancun on 3” where “Brooks 3” should have been.

Gilgeous-Alexander and Brooks are both from Canada and have played on their national team together for competitions such as the FIBA World Cup and the Olympic Games. There is great mutual respect between them, as Gilgeous-Alexander highlighted postgame on Monday.
“A great guy no matter what people say about him,” Gilgeous-Alexander told reporters. “He’s a really good guy when you get to know him. All that villain stuff, it doesn’t faze me. I know exactly who Dillon is. He had a hell of a series. Keep getting better, I’m proud of him.”

Brooks led the Suns with 26 points per game during the series, shooting 46% from the floor and 44% from deep. He dropped 23 points in Game 4.
Gilgeous-Alexander scored 33.8 points per game against Phoenix, the highest scoring average during the NBA playoffs entering Tuesday. The defending-champion Thunder will play the winner of the Houston Rockets-Los Angeles Lakers series.
As for Brooks and the Suns, the march toward 2026-27 begins.
“I love to work on my game, and I feel like the series that we just played opened up my mind to another way of getting to my shot and affecting the game,” Brooks told reporters on Tuesday.
