ALBANY, N.Y. — The New York State Sheriffs’ Association is warning people about a rise in scams aiming to hijack phones and steal sensitive information.
The association says the scam involves transferring your phone number to devices that hackers control. From there, the hackers can intercept calls and verification codes, giving them access to banking information, email, and other accounts. After that, the scammers often reset passwords and move money to other accounts.
The association says some warning signs of the scam include:
Sudden loss of cell service or “no signal” messages Notifications that your number has been transferred or changed Unexpected password reset requests Being locked out of your accounts If your phone suddenly loses service, contact your mobile provider immediately and secure your accountsIf you think you’ve been impacted by the scam, contact your local sheriff’s office.
