When it comes to iconic authors, there are a few who come to mind. One is a Pulitzer Prize winner who only published two novels, and they were published decades apart. Harper Lee would have turned 100 today, April 28, and while she’s not with us anymore, it doesn’t mean we don’t want to mark the occasion.
Lee’s first and biggest novel was To Kill a Mockingbird, published in 1960. Just a year later, it would win a Pulitzer Prize, and from that point, Lee didn’t see to write anything else. It would take decades for another novel to be published.
Considering the time period, Lee wasn’t afraid to ruffle some feathers, and it arguably led to one of the most iconic books of all time. To Kill a Mockingbird has certainly gained some negative reviews over time, but the story is an important one, touching on the topic of race and racial inequality.
As the daughter of a lawyer, Lee had some slightly more personal experience in writing Atticus Finch, including how her father defended two Black men accused of murder. Much of the story includes elements of Lee’s own life told from Scout’s point of view.
Despite the mixed reviews, To Kill a Mockingbird was adapted into a movie in 1962. It has also since been developed into a stage production.
The Publication of ‘Go Set a Watchman’
Despite the success of the first novel, Lee wouldn’t see another novel published until 2015, when Go Set a Watchman was finally released. There are debates over whether this was an earlier draft of To Kill a Mockingbird or a lost novel, but whatever it was, it would become the second and last novel published while Lee still lived. She died a year after the publication.
However, there has been a release posthumously. In 2025, The Land of Sweet Forever: Stories and Essays was published. It included eight short stories that Lee wrote before her most popular novel, that is now considered one of the books everyone should read before they die. Like her original novel, the short stories cover topics such as equality and politics.
Despite only having two novels, Lee will always be remembered as one of the greatest authors of all time, and it only seems appropriate to mark what would have been her 100th birthday.
