Why Your Zip Code Could Actually Be Your Most Expensive Skincare Step

You’ve got the 12-step routine down to a science. But it turns out your face might just hate where you live. A new study about 48 states just dropped, ranking them by how much the local environment is trying to wreck their inhabitants skin. They looked at the data that matters to skin: UV levels, air quality, humidity, and even how much wind whips across your cheeks.

If you want the skin of a literal angel, move to Delaware.

The state snagged the #1 spot because the weather stays in its lane. The climate is balanced, the UV exposure won't bake you like a potato, and the air isn't a soup of pollutants. Vermont and West Virginia followed close behind. These states win because they aren't urban nightmares. They have low UV levels and enough trees to keep the air clean.

Washington (#4) took the crown for the cleanest air in the country. Meanwhile, New Hampshire (#5) has liquid gold coming out of the taps, ranking highest for water quality. If you’ve ever noticed your skin feels like sandpaper after a shower in a different city, now you know why.

The top ten is a mix of cooler, calmer spots where your skin barrier isn't constantly under siege:

Oregon and Maine are great because the sun isn't a constant threat. Montana and Iowa might be sleepers, but they offer that sweet spot of decent air and humidity that doesn't leave you feeling like a swamp monster.

Jessica Maxcy from Eight Saints Skincare says most of us are doing summer all wrong. We buy the hype, but forget the heat. “One of the biggest mistakes people make heading into summer is focusing only on products and ignoring their environment. Sun exposure, humidity, and air quality all play a huge role in how your skin behaves day to day.”

Maxcy believes you can't out-moisturize a desert or out-wash a smoggy city if you aren't playing defense correctly: “A lot of people don’t realize that higher UV levels don’t just cause sunburn, they speed up aging and can weaken your skin barrier over time. That’s why consistent SPF use is non-negotiable, even on cloudy days.”

If you're in Arizona (#48) or Florida (#47), the news is grim. Arizona is like a UV furnace with zero humidity. Florida is a humid, sunny pressure cooker. Maxcy warns against the urge to scrub your face into oblivion when the sweat starts: “In summer, people tend to over-cleanse or use harsh products because their skin feels oily, but that can actually make things worse. Stripping the skin too much leads to more oil production and irritation.”

“If you’re living in an area with high pollution or poor air quality, cleansing properly at the end of the day becomes even more important,” says Maxcy. “That buildup can clog pores and lead to breakouts if it’s not removed. Simple habits matter more than people think. Wearing SPF daily, avoiding over-exfoliation, and adjusting your routine based on your climate can make a bigger difference than constantly switching products.”

Your skin is a living shield. And depending on where you parked your car, that shield is either resting in Delaware or fighting for its life in Phoenix. Check the full list. See where you land. Then maybe buy a bigger hat.
