There is no doubt that King Charles’ state visit to meet Donald Trump will be the toughest test of his lifetime’s training in diplomacy.
It comes at an extraordinarily fractious time for relations between the UK and US, following Trump’s public lambasting of Keir Starmer, and amid heightened tensions as Washington reels from the shooting at the White House correspondent’s dinner.
Royal experts agree that “there is no better person” than the King at working to build bridges between Trump and Keir Starmer, after a public deterioration over the US and Israel’s conflict with Iran.
Things got off to a potentially bumpy start before Charles and Camilla had even arrived, when 15 Australian flags were mistakenly put on display to welcome the monarch, before being replaced with the British flag.
Perhaps frustratingly for the curious, most of King Charles’ efforts at softening Donald Trump will come in private talks, behind closed doors.
However images and footage from the King’s first day in the US given an indication of how he will handle the president.
The handshake

His sustained and fierce engagement with other leaders’ hands (in particular, Emmanuel Macron’s) has become a regular spectacle and the source of much analysis.
In what could be a sign of things to come, King Charles appeared prepared for the inevitable Trump tug of war, ensuring Trump’s meaty grip never gained full control during the exchange, keeping his own hand close and then extracting it with dignity.

The US president is known for being awestruck by the monarchy, and spoke in glowing terms of the King before he arrived, describing him as “fantastic”.
“I know him well, I’ve known him for years. He’s a brave man, and he’s a great man,” he told the BBC last week.
But King Charles, an expert at the art of effortless conversation and easy charm, will also be deploying his well-honed skills on the president and first lady.

We may never know (Photo by Suzanne Plunkett /AFP via Getty Images)In the hours since their arrival in the US, King Charles and Camilla have captivated both Republicans and Democrats, top administration officials and other notable guests at an embassy garden party.
They were also escorted by Trump and Melania around the south lawn of the White House, in particular to view the “newly expanded” beehive.
The First Lady was seen sharing a laugh with the King, while Trump, who in the past has been criticised for policies affecting honeybees, appeared somewhat distracted.
Subtle cues

(AP Photo/Julia Demaree Nikhinson, Pool)While the King is a master of putting on a show of affability and charm, keen observers will be looking for any moment where the mask might slip.
A sideways glance from Camilla, a nod of the head, or a momentary flicker may give viewers hope of insight into the royal mind.
But many of the King’s efforts on the diplomatic front will take place away from reporters or the public eye.
One expert recently told The i Paper that King Charles will be “well prepared” for any controversies.
One former senior royal aide said: “There’s no better person in these types of situations. The King has been doing this for more than 50 years. He will listen to advice but he doesn’t need anyone to tell him what to do.”
Sources also told The i Paper previously that while the King will receive a briefing from the Foreign Office, he “won’t be afraid to voice his own opinions in private”.
