    SNAP resource fair

A resource fair on Monday at Monroe Community College’s downtown campus aims to answer questions about the new work requirements for some people receiving federal food assistance.

The county’s Department of Human Services, MCC, and more than 20 other groups are hosting the fair. It runs from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the campus on State Street. There will be a Foodlink curbside market at the fair.

To be eligible for SNAP benefits, people between 18 and 64 who aren’t caring for a child under the age of 14 must work or volunteer. That’s because of changes in federal policy. However, people who are receiving disability benefits, pregnant, or unable to work due to a physical or mental condition are exempt.

You can learn more about who is exempt on the state’s website. If you’re not exempt, you must work for 20 hours a week, paid or unpaid. Monroe County Executive Adam Bello is encouraging people to be familiar with the rule changes the next time they recertify their benefits.

More than 100,000 people in Monroe County rely on SNAP, accounting for about one in seven residents. Across the U.S., about 42 million people rely on SNAP.
