For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

Minnesota high school state champion Ellie Bina has announced her commitment to swim for Notre Dame beginning in the fall of 2026. She publicized the news on SwimCloud, writing:

I am so blessed and thrilled to announce my verbal commitment to the University of Notre Dame!! I’m so thankful for everyone who supported me through this process, I couldn’t have done it without them. A special thank you goes to coach Rawr, NSAC, MVGSD, my parents, and the coaches at Notre Dame. God is so good! Go Irish!

A senior at Mounds View High School, Bina has been a member of her school’s varsity swimming and diving team all four years. She currently trains year-round with North Suburban Aquatic Club, where she primarily specializes in distance freestyle.

Bina wrapped up her high school career at the Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL) AA State Championships in November, where she won the 500 free (4:55.44) and finished fourth in the 200 free (1:51.23), dropping half a second in the 200 and a second and a half in the 500 from her best times earlier in 2025. The 500 win marked her second career medal at the meet after taking third in the event as a sophomore, while her fourth-place finish in the 200 was a breakthrough after placing seventh in each of her first three seasons.

Bina also boasts a lifetime best of 16:43.32 in the 1650 free from a Sectionals meet in March 2025; her best since then was a 16:59.04 in December.

A Division I program, Notre Dame competes in the Atlantic Coast Conference, with the women’s team placing 11th out of 15 teams at this past season’s conference championships. Based on the results from the meet, Bina’s personal best would have placed 21st in the 1650 free, giving her a chance to score a few points right from the start. Meanwhile, it took times of 1:46.88/4:46.29 to earn a second swim in the 200/500 free, putting her outside the cutoff in those races.

On the team’s projected 2026-27 depth chart, Bina is slated to rank first in the 1650 free, seventh in the 500 free, and 11th in the 200 free, adding depth to a young distance group that returns all five of its ‘C’ final swims across the 200, 500, and 1650 at the ACC Championships, all swum by freshmen and sophomores this past season.

Bina joins a recruiting class that leans heavily toward the middle-distance free events. Also committed to Notre Dame’s class of 2030 are Caroline Mulrooney (distance free, 1:54.27/4:56.80/17:09.63), Catie Brenneman (wide-ranging free, 23.57/50.01/1:47.83/4:51.68/17:12.70), Renee Nealon (sprint free, 23.28/50.37/1:51.34), Camryn Tilger (fly/back, with free bests of 1:52.13/4:58.85), Jaylee Hager (fly/back, with free times of 23.15/49.90/1:47.59/4:53.13), and Averie Hager (fly, with free times of 22.59/49.63/1:48.43/4:56.27).
