Fans hoping for a reunion between Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz for a new Mummy movie have been waiting a long time, but that wait has just got a little bit shorter.
The already confirmed fourth instalment in The Mummy series, directed by Radio Silence (aka Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett), has been moved up on Universal Pictures' release calendar, with it now set to hit cinemas on 15 October 2027.
That's a full eight months ahead of the film's original release date, 19 May 2028. The move came as part of a number of moves from the studio.
An untitled Blumhouse movie has now shifted from The Mummy 4's new date to 7 October 2027, while Miami Vice ’85, the film directed by Joseph Kosinski and starring Michael B Jordan and Austin Butler, has moved from 6 August 2027 to The Mummy's original date, 19 May 2028.
Earlier this year, the Radio Silence duo teased that Weisz's. return in The Mummy 4 would mean that the third film in the series, The Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, would no longer be considered canon. This is because Weisz was replaced in the cast of that film by Maria Bello, who took up her role as Evelyn.
Explaining how they got Fraser and Weisz on board, Bettinelli-Olpin said it was all because of writer Dave Coggeshall’s script, which he said has "all of the heart and the character that you could hope for".
Gillett added: "I don’t think Brendan and Rachel are getting involved unless they love that script, and what they read, I think they really liked. And it’s a good script. It’s gonna be fun to make."
We don't yet know whether any other original cast members will be joining Fraser and Weisz in the new film. John Hannah, who played Evelyn's brother Jonathan in all three films, told Radio Times at the start of this year that he had not heard anything "officially" about a return for his character.
However, he added: "I mean, I've heard and seen the rumours same as everybody else, and that would be fun to do. It would be fun to hook up with everybody again."
The Mummy 4 is set to be released in cinemas on 15 October 2027.
The first three films in The Mummy franchise are currently available to stream on Sky Movies and NOW.
