Two young children have died in a house fire in Wolverhampton, West Midlands police have confirmed.
Emergency services were called to the property in the south of the city at about 8.30pm on Friday, with first responders attending from West Midlands police fire and ambulance services.
Firefighters entered the property and were able to remove two young children from it, but despite ambulance crews’ attempts to administer “advanced life support”, both were pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
Two other children and a woman were already out of the house when emergency services arrived, and did not require hospital treatment.
The police said they were working to establish the cause of the fire, and had cordoned off the property, which was extensively damaged.
In a joint statement, the emergency services said: “Our thoughts are with the children’s loved ones and all those impacted by this heartbreaking incident.
“Police have cordoned off the scene as officers work with emergency service colleagues to establish the exact circumstances of the fire.
“Officers remain at the scene today and we thank the community for their support with the ongoing investigation. The scene is expected to remain in place for some time at the property, which was extensively damaged, as inquiries continue.”
