You might not remember the first time you saw The NeverEnding Story, but you definitely remember the way it made you feel.
That rush of excitement when the movie’s synth-heavy theme song by Limahl kicks in. That strange, dreamlike pull of a world that’s both comforting and terrifying. Decades later, the film still acts as a portal — transporting viewers of all ages back to childhood on the back of a flying luckdragon.

View this post on InstagramThat’s why fans (us included) are thrilled to see the ’80s classic included in Collider’s list of “The 10 Greatest Epic Fantasy Movies of All Time.” In a cinescape dominated by giants like The Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter, its humble inclusion feels like a well-earned nod to the kind of fantasy storytelling is as emotionally raw as it is puzzling. (Don’t worry, the other two heavyweights also made the list.)
"It's not just a nostalgic film; it's also one of the finest epic fantasy movies ever conceived, and it has held that title for decades now," Collider writes. "It also features quite a banger '80s soundtrack, including the titular song, which remains a fan-favorite."
The story unfolds across dual worlds. The first involves a kid named Bastian, who hides away in his school’s attic during a storm to read a magical book called — you guessed it — The NeverEnding Story. As he reads, he’s pulled into world No. 2, aka Fantastica, a mythical realm slowly being swallowed by a dark force known as “The Nothing.”
Saving the world falls to a young warrior named Atreyu, whose journey encounters unforgettable creatures, both kind and evil. There’s Falkor, the optimistic luckdragon, and Morla the Ancient One, the world-weary turtle with respiratory issues. And then there’s the Swamps of Sadness, setting to one of the most devastating moments in movie history involving Atreyu’s horse, Artax (this is where we fast-forward just a bit).
Directed by Wolfgang Petersen, the film was a massive commercial success, banking around $100 million worldwide against a $25 million budget. According to Iconic Star Rewind, the German film also became one of the highest-grossing foreign-produced films in the U.S. at the time.
Now, more than four decades later, The NeverEnding Story still resonates, not just as an epic fantasy but as a reminder of how powerful imagination, hope, and storytelling can be.
The NeverEnding Story is streaming for free on Tubi.
