2026 GERMAN CHAMPIONSHIPS

Thursday, April 23rd – Sunday, April 26th Berlin, Germany LCM (50m) Live Results Livestream

The German Swimming Federation has released the selection procedures for the 2026 European Championships in Paris this summer, a a number of athletes will receive a chance to qualify this week.

Unlike other federations, however, Germany is not picking their team based on their performance at this week’s National Championship meet, but athletes must compete at the meet in order to be eligible for qualification. Section 4.1.2.1 of the qualification procedure document states

“Nomination for individual events is based on the following criteria:

1 A prerequisite for nomination is the fulfillment of the international qualification criteria set by European Aquatics and the DSV European Championship Standard (Section 4.1.6, Table 1) within the qualification period, as well as participation in the German Championships held from April 23–26, 2026 in Berlin and The FINALS held from July 23–26, 2026, in Hanover.”

The FINALS is an event in Germany where athletes from a variety of Olympic and non-Olympic sports will compete for national titles.

Athletes can receive an exemption from competing in the German Championships via a “substantiated request” submitted no later than March 1, 2026.

Once athletes meet the above criteria there are two paths to qualification

Athletes who earned a top-four finish in an individual event at the 2025 World Championships in Singapore will earn an automatic spot in that particular event. All the remaining spots will go to athletes with the fastest time achieved during the qualification period

This means that any race from March 30th – April 26th will be eligible for selection.

Relay spots will go to swimmers with the fastest time in individual strokes with a clarification that selection will belong to “specifically those whose times, when aggregated across the heats and semi-finals (or heats and finals_ on a single competition day within the qualification period, yield the best average time.”
