That could’ve been a much less exciting win for the Cubs, but I’ll never say no to a walk-off! The Cubs loaded the bases in the bottom of the 10th, and Dansby Swanson played hero to send the Cubs to their 9th straight win. Can’t walk it off if you don’t lose the lead first!
Edward Cabrera was pretty darn good today, even as he might be chided for “giving up the big lead.” The defense didn’t help him there near the end, and I thought he mostly looked strong. Technically a quality start, too.
It looked like Seiya Suzuki had hit the game-winner in the 8th, but Caleb Thielbar gave up a lead-off homer in the 9th to allow the Phillies to tie the game. Annnnd then left after seeming to pull his hamstring. The injuries in the bullpen are well past “mounting.” It’s absurd.
Riley Martin had to step into the situation with very little prep, and although he walked Kyle Schwarber after a long battle, he managed to get out of the 9th without allowing another run. It was a gutsy, huge performance. Similarly, Javier Assad came in for the 10th, with the free runner on second, fresh off getting moved out of the rotation, and just took care of business. Huge.
Michael Busch has been in a slump. Michael Busch has tended not to hit lefties too well yet in his career. Cristopher Sanchez is a dominant lefty. Combine those things, and it wouldn’t be on too many bingo cards that Busch would notch multiple hits off of Sanchez, including a monster homer to center field. But he did, and it continues that feeling of maybe things are turning.
The Ankin Law: “Making it Personal” Player of the Game has to be Dansby Swanson for the walk-off hit, his first with the Cubs. But obviously huge, huge props to Riley Martin and Javier Assad, and a huge game for Seiya Suzuki.
