Las Vegas and Macau are not immune to higher oil prices The casino hubs are both being impacted by the war in Iran One major airline is reducing its routes, including to Las Vegas, by 3.5%

Higher oil prices are impacting travel worldwide, including in the two largest casino hubs, Macau and Las Vegas.

The national average in the United States for a gallon of regular gas remains above $4, about 86 cents more than a year ago. The ongoing conflict in Iran and the Strait of Hormuz is keeping fuel costs high, and there’s seemingly no immediate relief in sight.

Reuters is reporting this morning that Iran seized at least two container ships on claims that they were operating without the appropriate permits and tampering with navigation systems. Iran is also demanding that the US Navy lift its blockade on the critical oil shipping route.

The war is having far-reaching consequences.

    Las Vegas Impact

In Las Vegas, airlines are considering adjusting route schedules in response to the higher fuel environment. Though airlines typically purchase jet fuel through long-term supply contracts, the carriers are bracing for higher costs in the future.

Delta Airlines has already taken action in response to its Southern Nevada business. Delta announced earlier this week that it would be suspending its service from Raleigh-Durham International in North Carolina to Las Vegas’ Harry Reid International from June 2 through Sept. 8.

Delta says it plans to trim about 3.5% of its flights during the summer to cut costs. More impacted routes to Las Vegas could be later announced, as Delta is the second-largest carrier at LAS in terms of annual passengers.

Passenger traffic at Harry Reid International was down 6% in January and February.

The Las Vegas Convention & Visitors Authority reports that daily automobile traffic along Interstate 15 at the Nevada and California border is up almost 3% year-to-date through March. Those numbers might cool in the coming months, as Californians scale back their driving to Las Vegas.

    Macau Ferry Prices Increase

In Macau, the Chinese enclave where casinos generate more gaming revenue than in any other place in the world, ferry prices are being raised in response to the elevated fuel prices.

TurboJET, the ferry service that connects Macau with Hong Kong in under an hour, has raised ticket prices by 10%. The price hike goes into effect this Saturday, April 25.

The alternative to TurboJET, the Cotai Water Jet, is similarly raising prices. The Cotai Water Jet says, beginning Saturday, day tickets for the economy “Cotai Class” will increase by 10% to HKD175 (US$22.34). Evening and weekend tickets are similarly increasing, with fares ranging from HKB220 to HKB245. Cotai Water Jet isn’t increasing prices for premium and first-class seats.

The ferry price increases pose a considerable threat to Macau, as the city now primarily focuses on the mass and premium mass player, demographics more likely to use such public transportation than the VIP.
