Enhanced Box Score: Cubs 7, Phillies 2 – April 22, 2026

The Chicago Cubs are the hottest team in baseball, winning their eighth straight game on Wednesday night. The team is firing on all cylinders, with both the pitching and the offense coming through in big moments.

Matthew Boyd returned from his brief stint on the Injured List on Wednesday on a limited pitch count, throwing just 84 pitches. He struck out five, allowing two runs in the process. Both runs were scored in the second inning, courtesy of an RBI double by Edmundo Sosa and an RBI groundout by Justin Crawford. Boyd wasn’t exactly dominant in his return, but he got the job done and kept the Cubs in the game, which is all you can ask.

Ben Brown relieved Boyd in the fifth inning, continuing what has been a sneakily good season for the 26-year-old. Brown logged 2.1 innings of scoreless baseball with five strikeouts. He’s looked quite promising after adding a sinker before the start of this season, with a 2.37 ERA across 19 innings. If Brown is able to continue his effectiveness in a multi-inning, non-mop-up relief role, it completely and immediately changes (for the better) the makeup of the Cubs bullpen.

The big story of the game was, once again, the red-hot offense. The Cubs’ bats were rather quiet to begin the year, but they’ve turned a corner during this winning streak, with Wednesday’s matchup being no different.

The Phillies used an opener, Kyle Backhus, in game three of the series, and he went just one ineffective inning before coming out of the game. Game-opening singles from Nico Hoerner and Alex Bregman were followed by an Ian Happ RBI groundout to give the Cubs an early lead. After that, Taijuan Walker came in for the second, and it also didn’t go well: Pete Crow-Armstrong destroyed a game-tying RBI double to center field.

In other positive news, Seiya Suzuki and Michael Busch each homered tonight. Suzuki for the second night in a row and Busch for the first time this season. The Cubs have done much of their damage this year without Suzuki, Busch, or Crow-Armstrong factoring into the equation. So if those three bats are truly starting to wake up, the Cubs could be even more dangerous than they are right now, which is extremely fun to think about.

Overall, it was yet another fantastic game by the Cubs. The offense scored seven runs for the second straight night, with multi-hit performances from four different bats. And unlike last night, they left only seven runners on base tonight, a MASSIVE improvement from the 17 runners stranded during Win #7 of this streak. Beyond that, the bullpen worked 4.1 scoreless innings, including stellar performances from Corbin Martin and Hoby Milner.

The Ankin Law “Making it Personal” Player of the Game is Pete Crow-Armstrong, who now has multiple hits in two straight games. He drove in two runs for the first time since Opening Day, yet another sign that his bat may finally be heating up.
