Alabama’s Board of Trustees is approving new contracts with updated compensation, and that means Nate Oats is officially on a new deal. UA announced an extension for the head basketball coach on Wednesday afternoon.
Oats is now extended through 2032. Alabama athletic director Greg Byrne revealed that Oats’ salary has been raised to $7.2 million. Oats’ buyout to leave for another school is $15 million through March 2027 and then $12 million from April 1, 2027 through March 2028. Nick Kelly noted that the buyout had been set to drop to $10 million this year and $4 million next year under the previous deal.
“I am blessed and honored for the opportunity to continue as the head coach of the men’s basketball program at the University of Alabama,” Oats said in a program release. “President Mohler, Chancellor Trant, the entire Board of Trustees and our athletics director Greg Byrne have been tremendously supportive and provided us the resources to compete for championships each and every year. We have enjoyed tremendous success during our seven years at Alabama, and we look forward to building on that for many years to come.”
Oats had recently been asked about a new contract at Alabama with high-profile jobs such as North Carolina open. In 2025-26, Oats guided UA to a 25-10 overall record, marking the first time in program history the Crimson Tide have won 25 games in 4 consecutive seasons. It’s also the first 4-year run of finishes inside the AP Top 25.
In 7 seasons, Oats has a 170-73 record at Alabama, leading UA to 2 regular-season SEC championships, 2 SEC Tournament titles, 5 trips to the Sweet 16 and Alabama’s first ever Final Four.
It was announced earlier in April that Oats had signed a new contract to become one of the five highest-paid college basketball coaches. Details of the deal, however, had not been revealed until Wednesday’s board meeting.
