As of April 22, several SSA offices are closed across the country, including those located in these 10 states:

The reasons for the disruptions are not listed on the SSA's website, but USA Today reports that some closures are related to ongoing construction. In other instances, it appears the offices may be temporarily closed because they don't have the capacity to accommodate people waiting in long lines that could stretch outside the office.

How to Find Out if Your Local Social Security Administration Office is Open

The SSA's website has a handy tool that lets you see which locations are closed in each state. All you need to do is click on the letter of the state you're searching for at the top of the webpage, and it will take you down to the alphabetized list where your state will appear.

From there, you can see the locations experiencing disruptions in your state, the expected duration of the closures, and any alternative options available to those who need help. For example, in Montana, both the Glasgow and Havre locations are closed or going to be closed in the future. However, the Glasgow location will only be taking telephone appointments from April 28 through April 30, while the Havre location is not open for in-person service until further notice.

What to do if Your Social Security Administration Office is Closed

It can be frustrating to learn that the SSA office you need to visit is closed, but that doesn't mean that you don't have any recourse if you need to connect with someone from the SSA. In most cases, you will have the option to call the national SSA number at 800-772-1213 for assistance.

You can often also get a good amount of information online by using some of the SSA's tools, including an FAQ feature that will walk you through a brief online questionnaire to see if you need to make an appointment to talk to someone, or if your questions or concerns can be answered in a different way.

To access this form, you'll need to search for your local office by zip code and follow the prompts.
