Ahead of the London Marathon this weekend, we use Opta’s tracking data to find out who stands out in the Premier League in 2025-26 for a series of physical metrics.
It’s London Marathon day on Sunday, so we’ve decided to take a look into Opta’s well of tracking data to see what we can uncover about the running habits of Premier League players in 2025-26.
So, which players have run the most? Who spends most of their games walking? Who is constantly on the move and may therefore be as good a candidate as any in the league to take part in Sunday’s marathon?
Who are the fastest players in the Premier League? And what about the slowest?
Let’s find out.
Who Has Run the Furthest in the Premier League 2025-26?
Elliot Anderson has a claim to be the fittest player in the Premier League. He has started all 33 of Nottingham Forest’s games this season, and has only been subbed off three times, missing a total of just 16 minutes of the entire campaign so far.
He has also run further than anyone else, having covered 364.6 kilometres, at a rate of 11.1 km per 90. James Garner, Morgan Rogers, Martín Zubimendi and Adrien Truffert make up the top five for total distance covered.
As you would expect, those are five of the outfielders who have played the most football this season – four of them are in the top seven for minutes played, with Zubimendi the exception, and even he is in the top 25.
We can look at per-90 numbers to see who works the hardest when they do get to play. Of players to feature for at least 2,000 minutes this season (thereby removing players who tend to have made a significant number of substitute appearances), Bernardo Silva comes out on top, running an average of 12.2 km per 90. That means he runs a marathon every 3.5 matches.
Bruno Guimarães (12.0 km per 90), Florian Wirtz, Anton Stach and Brenden Aaronson (all 11.7 km) make up the top five for distance run per 90 minutes played. Guimarães has run the furthest by any player in any individual game this season – 13.2 km against Leeds on 7 January, when Newcastle scored twice in second-half injury time to win 4-3.
Who Runs the Least?
The players who have covered the least ground are naturally just those who have played the least, so it’s best here to focus on per-90 stats. Also, when only looking at those to have played at least 2,000 minutes, the top 16 players are all, unsurprisingly, goalkeepers. Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sánchez has covered less ground than any other player, with an average of just 4.2 km covered per 90 minutes played.
But with goalkeepers removed, Liverpool centre-back pairing Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konaté cover the least ground, running an average of 8.7 and 8.9 km per 90, respectively. That might help to explain why they have been able to play so much; they are the most common centre-back partnership for any team in the Premier League this season, having started at least five games more together (31) than any other combination.
Taking out centre-backs, who take up the next 12 positions in the list, Fulham striker Raúl Jiménez is next up. The 32-year-old covers an average of 9.7 km per 90.
There are 34 midfielders who have played at least 2,000 minutes this season, and the one who covers the least ground is Chelsea’s Moisés Caicedo, averaging just under 10.0 km per 90 minutes played.
The shortest distance covered in a match by an outfielder who played the full 90 minutes is Chelsea’s Benoît Badiashile, who ran just 7.7 km in the 2-1 home defeat to Aston Villa on 27 December. On a day to forget for him, the Frenchman gave the ball away for Villa’s equaliser as Chelsea threw away a lead to lose on home soil.
Who Sprints the Most?
For the purposes of objective data logging, there has to be a numerical threshold for running fast to qualify as sprinting, and in our definitions, that is 25 km/h.
Defining it like this means there are some players who may feel like they are sprinting all the time – it may be sprinting to them – but they never reach a speed high enough to register an Opta-defined sprint. Of the 487 players to feature in the Premier League this season, 19 have never ‘sprinted’ once. Of those, West Ham goalkeeper Alphonse Areola has played the most minutes (1,800).
Everyone else has run fast enough to ‘sprint’, and Bournemouth’s Adrien Truffert has done so the most times, registering 736 sprints, ahead of Igor Thiago (692), Dominik Szoboszlai (651), Tyrick Mitchell (639) and Kevin Schade (632).
Of players to play at least 900 minutes, or 10 full matches, Anthony Elanga has spent the highest proportion of his game time sprinting (1.40%). He hasn’t had the most impactful debut season at Newcastle, but when he has been on the pitch, he has put plenty of effort in. He was actually top of this particular metric last season, too, so this is clearly an area where he excels.
He is followed by Yankuba Minteh (1.05%), Anthony Gordon (1.05%), Schade (0.97%) and Jackson Tchatchoua (0.96%).
And speaking of Tchatchoua…
Who Are the Premier League’s Fastest Players?
There has been little to remember about 2025-26 for Wolves fans, but they’ll always be able to say they saw right wing-back Jackson Tchatchoua run faster than anyone else in the Premier League (until this stage of the season, at least).
Tchatchoua has recorded the fastest top speed in the Premier League this season, topping out at 37.3 km/h.
Tottenham’s Destiny Udogie is second, ahead of Elanga, Bryan Mbeumo and Pedro Neto. Here are the top 10.
Just for some fun, the fastest goalkeeper in the Premier League this season is Jordan Pickford, who has hit a top speed of 32.1 km/h. That makes him the 347th-fastest player overall this season. Just a few of the many outfielders he has hit a faster top speed than are: Martin Ødegaard, Danny Welbeck, Lisandro Martínez and Pape Matar Sarr.
Who Are the Premier League’s Slowest Players?
What about the slowest players?
We’ve had to use a minimum minutes-played threshold here, as there are lots of players who have played only a little and may never have had the opportunity to get up to full speed. Let that be 900 minutes again.
We’ve also removed goalkeepers, because they make up the 19 slowest players, probably because they too don’t get as many opportunities to sprint.
With those criteria, Crystal Palace’s Will Hughes comes out as the slowest player in the Premier League this season, with a top speed of 29.54 km/h.
There are plenty of very effective Premier League players in this list, though. Speed isn’t everything, clearly.
Who Walks the Most?
Removing goalkeepers from our list, Van Dijk tops it both for total distance walked in the Premier League this season (129 km) and for the proportion of time spent walking, spending 77.0% of his time on the pitch walking (players with 900+ mins played).
Matheus Cunha was top of this list last season – just ahead of Van Dijk – and he is fifth this season, but first of all non-centre-backs (and goalkeepers). Cunha has been walking for 73.2% of his game time with Manchester United this season.
Who Jogs the Most?
Here are the real marathon men. Who is on the move most consistently at marathon speed with ‘jogging’ defined in our books as running between 6-15 km/h?
Zubimendi has jogged further than anyone else in the Premier League this season, racking up 178.7 km in total. That equates to 4.2 marathons.
When it comes to the players who spend the highest proportion of their time on the pitch jogging, Tomás Soucek comes out on top, having also been top last season. He has spent 34.9% of his game time at a jogging pace. Zubimendi (33.7%), Florentino (33.7%), Phil Foden (33.6%) and Bernardo Silva (33.3%) make up the top five.
Sometimes, slow and steady wins the race.
