Bergerac season 2 to see big changes for lead detective, reveals star Damien Molony

Damien Molony is once again starring as cop Jim Bergerac in a second season of Bergerac, the Jersey-set detective drama that is based on the beloved '80s series of the same name.

In the first season, which premiered on U&Drama in February 2025, Jim was coming to terms with the death of his wife, while raising his daughter Kim (Chloe Sweetlove) with the help of his mother-in-law Charlie (Zoe Wanamaker).

As the new season begins, it's been 18 months since Jim’s wife died, and Molony revealed in an interview with Radio Times that fans will see some big changes for his character.

“You get to see a new side of Jim. He was defined by grief in the first series, he was stuck in this awful swamp of pain and trying to get his life back together,” he said.

“I describe it as it’s like a circus tent, and Jim’s wife was the main pole, and now she’s gone.

"Now you’ve got these three people [Jim, Charlie and Kim] under the tarpaulin looking for a way out, but also trying to find each other under the tarpaulin. That’s where series 1 lay emotionally in my mind.”

“In series 2, the tarpaulin has been lifted,” he continued. “People are slowly but surely emerging from it and moving on. Jim’s daughter is moving on, and Jim’s mother-in-law, she’s moving on.

"She’s dating, and Jim’s in real danger of being left behind. His support network has moved on, and everyone is worried about what that will mean for him, whether he can cope, where he’ll descend back into alcoholism. So there’s this real fear about that, but also offshoots of hope.”

The hope that Molony refers to is that Jim tentatively enters the dating world in the new season. While the first blind date he has is a toe-curling disaster, in a twist of fate it leads him to meet someone new to the island.

“He meets this wonderful person, Nicola, who he has an instant connection with,” Molony explained. “They’re both addicts. They’re both coming from a real sense of pain and a real sense of loss, and they know that they can both help each other to emerge out of it.”

“But they also know that they’re probably their own worst enemies at the same time, and that sense of a moth getting too close to the flame was really exciting to play with.”

Bergerac season 2 is now on U&DRAMA.
