ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The Rochester City School District is discussing possible cuts to services for children who need additional support. That includes $2.8 million in cuts to districtwide counseling, social work and and psychological services.
Angela Colón-Rentas is worried that her daughter, a 6-year-old RCSD student, won’t have a support system at school to help navigate her mental health.
Colón-Rentas is one of five parents who planned to speak at the hearing in opposition to the proposed cuts. The current budget proposal also removes more than two dozen social worker positions.
Colón-Rentas says scaling back those services could lead to discipline issues, like increased suspensions. She is a former RCSD student herself and said she didn’t have access to the same level of counseling services that are available now.
She wants to make sure that’s not the case for future students.
“All the great work we’ve been doing throughout the years, these are being rolled back and cut out. In us as parents, you know, like it is it is frustrating, especially because we have been actively advocating for these specific programs for more of these programs. And what we’re seeing is the opposite. We’re seeing them being cut,” said Colón-Rentas.
