Alabama softball secures third SEC series sweep against Kentucky

Alabama softball revived its previous momentum this weekend, earning its third SEC series sweep of the season against Kentucky.

The series win came after suffering a case of the midweek slump and dropping its matchup against Samford last Tuesday.

    Game 1: Alabama 9, Kentucky 0

Both teams opened up the first inning scoreless on Friday before Alabama found its way home after back-to-back doubles by infielder Jena Young and outfielder Audrey Vandagriff.

After that, Alabama drove in at least one run in each inning, four of which were home runs.

Infielder Brooke Wells brought in her 19th home run of the season, tying her with 2015’s Marisa Runyon and 2008’s Charlotte Morgan for fourth place in most single-season home runs in team history.

Pitcher Jocelyn Briski held down the game for Alabama in the circle, throwing her third complete shutout game of the season.

“You have to give a lot of credit to Jocelyn Briski. Every single time she goes out there, she gives us an opportunity to win which is the number one thing a pitcher can do,” head coach Patrick Murphy said. “To throw a shutout in the SEC and even in Division I softball nowadays is quite a feat.”

    Game 2: Alabama 5, Kentucky 4

After an impressive first game, Alabama seemed to have forgotten its lesson from Samford, allowing Kentucky to take the lead in the sixth before securing a one-run lead in the seventh to win.

Going into the sixth inning, pitcher Vic Moten had held Kentucky to just one hit throughout all five innings. The Wildcats, who have lost their last 18 SEC games, came out of nowhere in the sixth to make three runs off of four hits to take the lead 4-2.

Alabama rallied and infielder Salen Hawkins kicked off the seventh with a leadoff double and then was advanced to third on a wild pitch. Wells brought in Hawkins with a single to right to lessen the gap to 4-3.

Catcher Marlie Giles hit a single to right field, tying the game 4-4, before Vandagriff came in with two outs already on the board and ended the game 5-4 with an infield single.

“It was a hell of a game between two good teams,” Murphy said. “It’s SEC softball on a Saturday where one team is trying to win a series and one team is trying to fight for postseason.”

    Game 3: Alabama 4, Kentucky 0

After barely sneaking off with the win on Saturday, Alabama came into Sunday full force, shutting out Kentucky 4-0.

Alabama kicked off the scoring immediately in the first inning with an RBI double down the right field line from Wells. In the second, she struck again with another RBI double. Giles added to Wells’ run tally in the second with an RBI single up the middle.

“Offensively, we mixed in a couple of really good at-bats, but the two in the order that were outstanding were Alexis Pupillo at the leadoff and Brooke Wells right behind her, “ Murphy said. “Those two together are a deadly combination.”

Hawkins put up the final run of the game in the fourth with an RBI single that brought home Young.

Pitcher Kaitlyn Pallozzi earned the win in the circle, her first in SEC play, allowing only three hits.

Alabama will play again on Tuesday against UAB in Birmingham. The first pitch is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. CT.
