PACIFIC BEACH – Although Optml Health in Pacific Beach is pretty spacious, occupying almost 2,000 square feet within a multi-story office building, most people in the area have no idea what or where it is —including other occupants of the building it’s in.
In fact, if you want to visit the business, you’ll either have to already know exactly where to go or be prepared to look for it; they’re located at the bottom of two flights of stairs in the basement of a building that doesn’t have a lot of signage.
“We’re San Diego’s only wellness speakeasy,” said Samuel Wagg, one of Optml Health’s two co-owners, half-jokingly. “Because you kind of have this vibe of, we’re down in the basement, and it’s separated kind of, away from the world.”
“Ironically, we’re on Bunker Hill Street,” he added. “You wouldn’t really know it’s here.”
Optml Health, which held its grand opening in March, specializes in a variety of services intended to allow people to remain healthy as they age.
Among the services offered are chiropractic care, personal training, cold plunge therapy, an infrared sauna, and a recovery room.
“We focus on five basics — sleep, nutrition, stress management, exercise, and recovery. We coach people on the nutrition aspect and help them to sleep, if needed,” Wagg said.
“We have a place where you can work out, and we have a place where you can recover. And then the way that our space is set up is to help manage your stress. It’s very calming.”
Wagg, a licensed chiropractor and former college athlete, started the business with his fiancée, Stephania Och, a personal trainer and fitness instructor. They previously worked apart in complementary but separate businesses, and for years referred clients back and forth between their offices.
Eventually, they decided to join forces and start a business focused on healthy longevity.
After evaluating potential locations for their joint venture, they chose the building at 3033 Bunker Hill to set up operations.
Wagg said the location has proven to be a good fit for many reasons.
“The community is much more of an activity-based community,” he said, adding that it helps that Pacific Beach isn’t too far from most places in and around San Diego.
“We have a big parking lot (and) we’re close to the highway, so if you’re traveling from south or north of our location and it’s not too bad to get here,” he added.
As far as the interior setup, Wagg said that the spaciousness allows him and his fiancée to set a tranquil mood and tone within its walls.
“We don’t have a lot of technology and stimulus in our office, so it’s meant to be a very relaxing place,” he said. “It’s important for us that no matter what service you get, when you leave here, you should just feel better. That was really something that we’ve done intentionally, from the color tones and palette that we use for our place.”
“And even our lighting, it’s a very dim, moody kind of lighting because we want everyone to feel comfortable rather than, like, there’s this huge spotlight on you, and everyone can see what you’re doing, and everyone can see you,” he added.
For anyone hoping to set up a consultation, Wagg said he charges $245 for an initial visit, which includes an evaluation, assessment, and treatment. His clientele is mainly people who want to take steps to lead long, healthy lives.
“We’re not here for the short term, of like ‘time to get in shape for whatever’ season,” he said. “It’s really the longevity through lifestyle, like, ‘hey, you have to be hitting on those five areas all the time, and we’re here to help you do that, and really make health and an uncompromising part of your life.”
