ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Two years after New York State allocated $18 million to expand Rochester’s train station, construction has yet to begin. So, what’s the holdup?
In April 2024, the state budget set aside funding to make the Louise M. Slaughter Rochester Train Station intermodal by adding long-distance bus service, such as Greyhound.
A viewer named John wrote to News10NBC saying: “In April 2024 the NYS budget allotted $18 million for the expansion of the Rochester train station to make it intermodal by accommodating long-distance busses such as Greyhound. I can’t find any updates about design or construction timelines since.”
Amtrak says no developer has been selected yet. News10NBC’s Emily Putnam visited the station on Central Avenue and found no visible changes. Amtrak owns the station, which opened in 2017 to replace a smaller facility. A bus terminal and parking area are planned for the site.
Amtrak says: “While a developer has not yet been selected, Amtrak continues to evaluate proposals and remains committed to working collaboratively with NYSDOT and local partners as the process moves forward.”
The New York State Department of Transportation confirmed that discussions are ongoing, saying: “Details are still being discussed regarding the operation and maintenance of the bus portion of the future facility – for which Amtrak is the owner of the land and rail station. These conversations are ongoing.”
Senator Jeremy Cooney’s office said the state funding is ready to go. When the funding was announced two years ago, Cooney said the bus station across the street from the train station was always meant to be temporary. It has now been in operation for 14 years.
