The ever-so cricket and social media-savvy former India offspinner Ravichandran Ashwin once again took to his social media handles to sing praises of two particularly young players who could be the future.
Reacting to the news of Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and India U-19 batter Ayush Mhatre being ruled out of IPL 2026, Ashwin put forward the names of two of Mhatre's Under-19 World Cup-winning teammates, one of whom is currently contracted to Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), as replacements that CSK should sign.
CSK are currently placed eighth on the points table of IPL 2026 and have been plagued by injury. Nathan Ellis was ruled out before the start of the tournament and was replaced by Spencer Johnson. But Johnson himself is recuperating from an injury and hasn't joined the team. MS Dhoni is recovering from a calf strain and hasn't played any matches.

Dewald Brevis missed the initial matches due to injury but came back into the team. Unfortunately, he has had to sit out the last few matches due to the injury as well. Now almost halfway into the season, CSK have lost both Khaleel Ahmed and Ayush Mhatre to injuries as well. They are yet to name a replacement for either of the two.
Ravichandran Ashwin suggests two replacements for Ayush Mhatre
Ravichandran Ashwin took to his X account and suggested that CSK could try one of two young players as replacements for Mhatre.
Ayush Mhatre was the captain when India won the Under-19 World Cup in February of this year, and both names suggested by Ashwin were Mhatre's teammates; in fact, one of them was Mhatre's vice-captain.
Malhotra is a batting allrounder from Punjab who bats left-handed and bowls a little bit of offspin. He was the vice captain of the Indian Under-19 team that won the World Cup this year. At that tournament, he made 240 runs at an average of 60, including two fifties, and took five wickets, which included a four-wicket haul against Bangladesh.
At the IPL 2026 auction, Vihaan Malhotra was bought by RCB for his base price of Rs. 30 lakh. Ravichandran Ashwin suggested that CSK could sign Malhotra on a loan system, as he has not yet played for RCB.
Abhigyan Kundu
The other name suggested by Ashwin was the left-handed wicketkeeper from Mumbai - Abhigyan Kundu.
Kundu was the wicketkeeper of the Ayush Mhatre-led team that emerged champions in the Under-19 World Cup. He made 239 runs with two fifties at an average of 59.75 in the Colts tournament. His crowning glory, though, came two months earlier in the Under-19 Asia Cup when he made a double century against Malaysia.
Abhigyan Kundu is not currently contracted to any IPL franchise and could be picked up by CSK.

With so many injuries on the horizons! The loan window closes after the 7th game mark & it will be a great idea to loan this sensational talent from RCB.He hasn’t played a single game so far, hence it is a viable option. If not Vihaan, Abhigyan Kundu is also a left handed… pic.twitter.com/CimZCIjTyV

So far, CSK have won only two of their six matches and are eighth on the points table. In their next match, they will meet seventh-placed Mumbai Indians, who have also won just two of their six matches.
The marquee 'El Clásico' clash will take place at the Wankhede Stadium on April 23.
