WOOOOOOOO. The Cubs just stretched their winning streak to six, while pushing the Phillies’ losing streak to six. A switched flipped last week in Philadelphia.
Once again, Colin Rea was outstanding. It’s been six months of this guy having to step in and start unexpectedly, and just putting together useful outing after useful outing. He had some tremendous defensive help behind him tonight, but he also so rarely lets himself get into trouble. Rea throws strikes, lets his defense work, and usually limits hard contact enough to keep too many runs off the board.
Speaking of which, kudos to the bullpen crew for stepping up to finish things out. Injuries have depleted the group tremendously, forcing guys into atypical roles (especially when other pitchers are down for the night), and they made it work. Tonight it was Hoby Milner and Corbin Martin. Other nights, it’s other guys. Gotta have it right now.
Also, to reiterate, the Cubs had a FANTASTIC defensive night out there. Multiple runs could’ve scored – with big innings potentially created – in several key moments. Great, great defense overall.
The Ankin Law: “Making it Personal” Player of the Game has to be Colin Rea for another exceptional outing, though obviously Dansby Swanson gets a lot of credit for the big dinger.
