SEC baseball update: Standings, takeaways after the 6th weekend of conference series

The second half of conference play started with a bang this past weekend. With the 10th week of the 2026 college baseball season now in the books, SEC teams have played 6 of their 10 series.

Georgia is holding on to the top spot in the standings, though a surging Texas A&M is right there in the loss column. The Aggies are 1 game behind UGA in the win column, and that’s with having 1 played fewer conference contest thanks to last weekend’s cancellation of the Texas series finale due to weather.

Before takeaways from this past weekend, let’s take a look at the full updated conference standings:

    Georgia — 13-5 SEC (32-9 overall) Texas A&M — 12-5 (31-7) Texas — 11-6 (30-8) Mississippi State — 10-8 (30-10) Ole Miss — 10-8 (29-12) Auburn — 10-8 (27-12) Oklahoma — 10-8 (27-12) Florida — 10-8 (28-13) Alabama — 9-9 (28-13) Arkansas — 9-9 (26-15) Vanderbilt — 9-9 (24-17) Kentucky — 8-10 (26-12) Tennessee — 8-10 (26-14) LSU — 6-12 (23-18) South Carolina — 5-13 (19-22) Mizzou — 3-15 (20-20)

    Top Takeaways of the Week

Here are the storylines from the week that we’re paying attention to the most:

Texas A&M is the hottest team in the league

Back in March, Texas A&M stumbled out of the gate in SEC play with series losses to Oklahoma (1-2) and Georgia (1-2). Since the home series loss to UGA, the Aggies have been the hottest team in the conference.

Pick your favorite streak with A&M. The Aggies are climbing the rankings and the standings by winning their last 6 games against Texas (2-0), Houston (1-0) and LSU (3-0). Going back further, Texas A&M has won its last 4 SEC series, sweeping Mizzou and taking care of Vanderbilt (2-1) before back-to-back sweeps of Texas (2-0) and LSU (3-0).

LSU is having a rough 2026 season, but it’s still a big deal to take all 3 from the Tigers in Alex Box Stadium, regardless of record. Of note, the Aggies have held opponents to 4 runs or fewer in each of the last 5 games.

Ole Miss flexes with another series road win

When talking about the hottest SEC teams, Ole Miss belongs in the conversation as well. In late March, Ole Miss was swept by Mississippi State in Oxford. Then the Rebels’ luck seemingly changed with the calendar.

This month, Ole Miss is 7-2 in SEC play with series wins over Florida, LSU and Tennessee, including trips to Gainesville and Knoxville. The Rebels have surged to 10-8 in the conference standings. That’s just 3 games off the leader, Georgia, at 13-5.

Up next for Ole Miss? The Rebels host UGA in Oxford. Speaking of the Bulldogs…

Georgia makes the weekend’s loudest statement

SEC baseball fans are well aware that Georgia is the league’s top slugging team this year, but a 26-run display is still enough to make jaws drop. The Bulldogs put a football score up at Baum-Walker Stadium on Saturday, defeating Arkansas 26-14 in the rubber game to claim the series.

For Arkansas, the way the Razorbacks lost may sting worse than the final score. Though UGA scored first in the top of the 1st inning, the Hogs scored the next 6 runs. Entering the top of the 3rd, Arkansas led Georgia 6-1. Unfortunately for the Razorbacks, there were 7 more innings to play.

Georgia scored 6 in the 3rd to take a 7-6 lead and never looked back. The Bulldogs scored in every inning except the second. After 8, it was 15-11 in UGA’s favor.

The Bulldogs broke the Razorbacks’ spirits with an 11-run 9th inning to extend the lead to a stunning 26-11. The game did not end via the run rule because Arkansas, as the home team, was given a chance to respond. The Hogs managed 3 runs before the final out.

One has to wonder if the Hogs can mentally move on after a demoralizing 12-run loss with 6 errors.

    Auburn resilient on the road

We questioned Auburn on the road heading into the Florida series. The Tigers answered load and clear.

Butch Thompson’s team dropped Thursday’s series opener. Auburn trailed in Friday’s Game 2 and Saturday’s Game 3, but the Tigers returned to The Plains as series winners 2-1.

The Tigers did the kind of things that coaches dream about. In Game 2, Florida missed what should have been an inning-ending pop out. With the runner from second full-go with 2 outs, a pop-up that landed in the infield tied the game. The batter who should have waited to hit until next inning with the bases empty instead hit a 2-run home run and the 2-1 deficit became a 4-2 lead. AU would hold on to win 5-3.

The Gators and Tigers were playing a close Game 3, until the Auburn bats took over. Florida jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the 1st inning and still led 3-2 after 7 innings. UF was 6 outs away from holding on for the series win. Instead, AU scored the next 6 runs to take an 8-3 lead and Florida only managed 2 in the 9th for the 8-5 final.

As the ESPN crew mentioned, this past weekend in Gainesville had Super Regional vibes. Auburn may finish as a top-8 national seed, but the Tigers showed that they can win big games on the road if that’s where the path to Omaha takes them.

Checking in on the below .500 teams

With 4 more SEC series to go, every outcome is looked at through the lens of how it impacts a team’s postseason outlook. Three teams hoping to make the postseason had rough weekends.

After winning Friday night’s series opener in thrilling fashion, Kentucky dropped the next 2 at home against Vanderbilt, losing the series. UK is now 8-10 in SEC play, a pace that’s just good enough to get 13 regular-season conference wins, the oft-cited number for an at-large NCAA Tournament bid.

Most concerning for Kentucky is that it has now dropped 4 consecutive series after starting 5-1 in SEC play. Kentucky faces South Carolina, Tennessee, Florida and Arkansas down the stretch. South Carolina should be a bounce-back opportunity, but the other 3 series could go either way.

Tennessee appeared to save its season with the sweep at Mississippi State. The roller coaster ride, though, had another twist ahead with a 1-2 showing against Ole Miss on Rocky Top.

The Vols are also 8-10 in the SEC, and the schedule doesn’t let up. Tennessee next hosts Alabama, currently No. 4 in RPI. In May, UT will travel to Kentucky (No. 29 RPI), host Texas (No. 2 RPI) and end the regular season on the road at Oklahoma (No. 17 RPI). Winning at least one of those series should be doable, but the Volunteers also must avoid being swept.

LSU is in a bad spot. The Tigers are now 6-12 in SEC play after back-to-back sweeps by Ole Miss and Texas A&M. Jay Johnson’s team is above .500 overall (23-18), but with 6 SEC wins all season, it’s going to be tough to notch 7 more SEC wins over the next 4 series against Mississippi State, South Carolina, Georgia and Florida.

The Gamecocks are struggling, even after dismissing Paul Mainieri, and LSU needs to be thinking sweep for postseason purposes. There’s still, though, the matter of trips to Starkville and Athens, and the final series against Florida in Baton Rouge, where LSU hasn’t been its usual self this season.

South Carolina and Mizzou would need to win the SEC Tournament to make the NCAA Tournament.
