One of the greatest high school swimming coaches in Montana history is calling it quits.
Last week, Great Falls Public Schools announced that longtime head coach Ed McNamee is retiring after a storied 22-year career for both Great Falls and C.M. Russell High Schools.
Between the two programs, McNamee collected nine state championships, 11 runner-up finishes and nine third-place finishes.
McNamee was an NHSACANational Coach of the Year finalist five times and was named the Montana Coaches Association (MCA) Coach of the Year seven times. He was inducted into the MCA Hall of Fame in 2023.
In November, McNamee was named the first-ever head coach for the Great Falls baseball program, which is currently in its inaugural season.
McNamee will still serve as head coach of that baseball program as he gives up the swimming job.
The heyday of McNamee’s coaching career came from 2008 to 2012, when he led the C.M. Russell girls’ team to five straight Class AA state titles. The C.M. Russell boys team won a state title in 2010.
McNamee continued winning championships at Great Falls, leading the girls’ program to state championships in 2022, 2023 and 2025 and a state runner-up finish in 2024. He also led the boys’ team to a state runner-up finish this past season.
“The GFPS Athletic Department and Administrative teams at both Great Falls High and C.M. Russell thank Coach McNamee for his years of dedication to the athletes of Great Falls High, CM Russell and the sport of swimming,” GFPS Athletic Director Mike Henneberg said in a statement.
“Ed developed and established a unique culture in which all athletes were valued and four programs meshed into one family. This leadership, coupled with local longtime swimming supporters, a dedicated group of parents and a highly engaged group of alumni have made Great Falls Swimming one of the premier programs in the state of Montana. While change is difficult, Ed built the foundation for future generations of swimmers to thrive and enjoy unprecedented success. We will miss him, but wish him the best of luck in all his future endeavors.”
Great Falls will open applications for the vacant swim coach position on April 27.
