Mint location guide: Where was the BBC drama filmed?

As well as leaning into magical realism and a variety of artistic angles to accompany the unfolding love story of Mint, the new BBC series also boasts some impressive shots of its surroundings.

With our central characters Shannon (Emma Laird) and Arran (Benjamin Coyle-Larner) quickly embarking on their own whirlwind romance but being from opposing criminal families, the first episodes focus on their connection and literal spark.

But with Arran not being a local in the area and having a brother who's involved in making Shannon's family's lives more troublesome, their future hangs in the balance. However, the setting of the series is as much one of the characters of the series as anyone else, providing ample moody imagery and scenic landscapes to accompany the genre-bending story.

So, where was Mint filmed? Read on for everything you need to know about the locations used in the BBC series, including some insight about the Scottish setting from the show's creator Charlotte Regan.

The new BBC series was shot in Scotland, primarily in Glasgow and Grangemouth, which is a seaport and industrial town that previously boasted a major oil refinery complex – which we can see clearly depicted in many shots of the drama.

According to The Falkirk Herald, scenes for Mint were filmed in specific areas of Grangemouth like Fintry Road and Tummel Place.

Speaking about choosing to shoot in Scotland for her debut TV series, Mint writer, director and creator Charlotte Regan told Radio Times: "I worked in Scotland a few years before writing the show and thought the crew were there were the best people in the world and knew I couldn't make something without them.

"I'm sure I'll probably follow them around for the rest of my career. And then my nan was also from Scotland so I spent a lot of time there in the summer holidays. I just always found it - you know, in bingo halls and things like that with my nan, I found it quite an incredible place. Like really cinematic and just full of great human beings both in front of the camera and behind it."

Also speaking to the BBC about her choice of setting, Regan said of filming in Scotland: "I love it and I'd go most summers when I was a kid. I did a show there a few years ago and I just love the crew in Scotland. You feel like everyone's very much a collaborative part of the show. So that was a big part of why we filmed there.

"In Scotland, people are interested in it, especially somewhere like Grangemouth, where they don't get much filming. We tried to engage the community and when you do that, I find, they're super welcoming. Every day, they come and hang out and I love that atmosphere. The local cast are amazing as well. There are so many amazing actors in Scotland."

Mint will begin airing on BBC One at 9pm on Monday 20 April, with all episodes available on BBC iPlayer that day at 6am.
