After enjoying huge success at the box office and a wave of very positive reviews, Project Hail Mary has had its streaming premiere date pushed back so the film can enjoy an extended theatrical run.
The film – which stars Ryan Gosling and is directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller – is currently the third-highest grossing release of 2026 globally, behind only The Super Mario Galaxy Movie and Chinese film Pegasus 3.
Meanwhile, it has also become Amazon MGM Studios highest-grossing release of all time, so there's perhaps no surprise that the studio is keen to further maximise its success.
The news to extend was confirmed by Miller on X, where he wrote: "MGM is extending the exclusive theatrical window for Project Hail Mary so it won’t be on streaming anytime soon."
He added: "This is a movie that needs to be seen on a big screen – and w[ith] a full return to IMAX screens for 1 week only starting this weekend, make plans to see it in a theater now!"
As yet, there's no indication of when exactly that streaming release has been pushed back to – but with the film continuing to play on several big screens around the country, there's still plenty opportunity to see the film right now.
As the film is an Amazon MGM Studios production, we can expect it to eventually arrive on Prime Video, and we'll let you know as soon as we hear anything about its delayed streaming date.
View Green Video on the source websiteThe film is based on Andy Weir's novel of the same name and sees Gosling star as Ryland Grace, an astronaut who awakens from a coma in space with no idea who he is, how he got there or what mission he's expected to accmomplish.
Throughout the film – and with help from some extended flashbacks – we slowly learn the vital nature of his mission, while he also bonds with an adorable, rock-based alien named Rocky whose been sent to outer space by his own planet for a similar goal.
In our 4-star review of the film, Radio Times called it "science fiction with a reassuring soul, where the sombre comes bearing a smile, and the vastness of space is never quite so scary when you’re sharing it with a new pal."
Project Hail Mary is now showing in UK cinemas.
