Ellis joins John Groce’s first unit in Charleston after Cougars head coach Chris Mack accepted the South Florida job in March. It’s a solid grab for Groce and a good landing spot for Ellie, a former 4-star prospect in the Class of 2025.

While he showed some flashes, it’s obvious that he wasn’t quite ready for the grind of an SEC schedule — that was shown especially by his shooting splits. Ellis was great at the free throw line but poor everywhere else, averaging 27% from 3 and 38,6% from the field overall. He entered the portal following South Carolina’s 13-19 season.
The Hickory, North Carolina native is the second South Carolina transfer to announce their commitment to another school. He joins fellow 2025 freshman Abu Yarmah, who recently committed to Longwood.
