BRIGHTON, N.Y. — The second annual Flower City Special Hockey Invitational brought together hockey players with developmental, cognitive and physical disabilities from across the country at the Tim Horton’s Iceplex.
News10NBC’s Declan Stablow stopped by the event. One of the founders, Mike Kita, said having a program like this was a need and that everybody deserves a chance to play hockey in a setting where they’re accepted and appreciated.
One player said when he started, he didn’t know anything about skating. Now he’s skating backwards.
Coaches said the social aspect is also huge for the players. They love getting to travel to different states and see the same friends each time.
The Tim Horton’s Iceplex is serving as a temporary home for Flower City Special Hockey. Their home arena, the Scottsville Ice Arena, is closed for repairs and they’ve had to bounce around.
“We didn’t miss any hockey. And that goes to our parents, our board volunteers, and the other great local rink said, you know, gave us a space at home at the last second. And, you know, it’s not tough. It’s not easy finding ice time, especially in Rochester with all the rinks and all the teams. But we didn’t skip a beat. And, you know, we do it because of, you know, where the athletes got to be out there and want to be out there,” Kita said.
This year’s event brought out teams from Binghamton, Cleveland and Detroit. Organizers said events like this wouldn’t be possible without community support and parent volunteers.
