For the second straight weekend, Carson Kelly played hero! How awesome (and clutch) has this guy been in a Cubs uniform?!

This time, Kelly launched a pinch hit (for Moises Ballesteros), game-winning three-run home run (105.2 mph & 405 feet) in the bottom of the 6th inning off lefty reliever Brooks Raley.

You kinda feel for Ballesteros, who has certainly earned the opportunity to hit for himself against lefties, but keeps getting pinch-hit for very successfully. Not a bad problem to have.

But back to the man at hand, Carson Kelly is undoubtedly one of Jed Hoyer’s best signings in his five years as Cubs President of Baseball Operations. His defense is sharp, he’s been worth 4.0 WAR (3.6 last season) in the 128 games he’s played in a Cubs uniform, and he comes off as a good dude who’s well-liked by his teammates. All that for just 11.5 million dollars over two years. Well done, Jed. Well done.

Ben Brown allowed an unearned run in relief of starter Jameson Taillon, pitching the 7th and 8th innings and working around three baserunners. Caleb Thielbar played closer today and looked as sharp as he’s been all season, striking out Tommy Pham and Marcus Siemen before getting Tyrone Taylor to fly out to shortstop for his first save of the season.

Besides a clobbered Mark Vientos home run in the top of the 2nd, and an Ian Happ homer in the bottom of the 2nd, starting pitchers Taillon and Freddy Peralta both delivered quality starts. Taillon finished: 6.0 IP, 5H, 1ER, 3BB, 4K, bringing his ERA down to 3.97. It’s especially good to see him settle in, given his increasing importance injury after injury.

The Ankin Law: “Making it Personal” Player of the Game is who else? Carson Kelly. Who’s now hitting .340/.450/.970. Stay hot, Carson!

Meanwhile, the Cubs’ offense itself failed to remain as absurdly hot as it’s been recently, totaling just five hits. The weather wasn’t as hitter-friendly today, but Peralta mostly did what he usually does against the Cubs, finishing: 5.2IP, 3H, 3ER, 2BB, 3K.
