Mint creator pitches spin-off for key character and addresses the show’s future

As new BBC drama Mint arrives on screens, the show's creator Charlotte Regan has teased whether we could see more beyond its first eight-part season - and revealed the character she would most like to see a spin-off for.

Speaking exclusively with Radio Times alongside star Benjamin Coyle-Larner, Regan was asked which moment, or moments, from the series she was most looking forward for viewers to see, and they centred primarily around one character - Lindsay Duncan's Ollie.

The matriarch of the show's central crime family, mother to its head Dylan, and grandmother to the show's lead character Emma, Ollie is a formidable force, and one Regan is excited for fans to meet.

"I think I always look forward to people seeing Ollie's moments, and seeing Lindsay as Ollie," she said. "It feels different to other things I've seen her in. Even the first day I saw her on set, I was like, ‘Oh my God, that's a proper transformation.’ So, I think I get excited for people to meet Ollie."

"I would love a little 'Ollie goes to Ibiza' spin-off, if the BBC will fund it. Just all about Ollie on like a lads on tour kind of holiday, pints, pints, pints," Regan added, laughing.

When asked whether she would be interested in returning to Mint for a second season, Regan said she's "just having time off" currently.

"You almost kind of need space from it and you almost want audiences to take control of it and tell you what it is in lots of ways," she added. "You do and you don't, to then know how you're feeling about it."

In the interview, Regan also spoke about what viewers can expect from Ollie, teasing: "Her character, Ollie, I think it was just a grandma that I recognise - it's not my nan, but it's women I've met and women I've seen and interacted with, but very rarely get to see in these kind of things.

"I didn't want her to be at home, baking and knitting and stuff like that. She's out there. She's probably the backbone of the entire family, I would say."

Alongside Coyle-Larner and Duncan, the series also stars Emma Laird, Sam Riley, Laura Fraser and Lewis Gribben.

Mint will begin airing on BBC One at 9pm on Monday 20 April, with all episodes available on BBC iPlayer that day at 6am.
