Gaming adaptations are ten a penny in Hollywood at the moment – and so it was only a matter of time before one of the biggest video game franchises of all time, Call of Duty, hit the big screen.
And Paramount has now confirmed that the film adaptation of the games will be released in cinemas in just over two years time, with an official release date of Friday 30 June 2028 unveiled during the studio's presentation at CinemaCon in Las Vegas.
The film is being directed by Peter Berg (Lone Survivor, Deepwater Horizon) and will be scripted by Taylor Sheridan, best known for his vast empire of US TV shows including Yellowstone, Tulsa King and Landman.
In a video message that played during the presentation, Berg said that he and Sheridan were both "deeply connected to the special ops community" and added that they were prioritising authenticity for the film.
No further plot details have been made available at this stage, so it will certainly be interesting to see exactly how they go about transforming the first person shooter series into a cinematic narrative.
Meanwhile, there has also been no word on any casting news for this film at this stage, but we'll be keeping our eyes out for any exciting developments on that front.
It was first revealed last October that Sheridan and Berg were working on the film, and plans to make a Call of Duty movie date back as far as 2015 – with a script even having been written before the planned movie was delayed indefinitely in 2020.
It's been more than two decades since the first Call of Duty game launched back in 2003, and in that time the series has become a major global phenomenon and one of the bestselling gaming franchises of all time.
In total, there have been more than 20 games in the main series – plus a number of other spin-offs – with the most recent release being Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 in 2025. No shortage of source material to draw on, then!
Call of Duty will be released in cinemas on 30 June 2028.
