ALBANY, N.Y. — The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration is withholding more than $73 million in federal highway funds from New York State on Thursday.
The state is accused of issuing commercial driver’s licenses illegally and refusing to revoke them. New York State has said CDLs (commercial drivers license) are regulated by the federal government and New York is following all federal rules.
“I promised the American people I would hold any state leader accountable for failing to keep them safe from unvetted, unqualified foreign drivers. I’m delivering on that promise today by refusing to fund Governor Hochul’s dangerous, anti-American policies. My message to New York’s far left leadership is clear: families must be prioritized on American roads,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy.
Specifically, the administration said the DMV’s systems have a default of issuing eight-year licenses to foreign drivers for non-REAL ID licenses, regardless of when the legal status of immigrants ended.
“Withholding dollars that keep New Yorkers safe shows a blatant disregard for the well-being of our neighbors and a vindictiveness that’s come to define this White House,” state Sen. Jeremy Cooney said.
