ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Gold Star mothers from across New York will spend the weekend in Rochester, spending time together, visiting war memorials and discussing the mission to honor their fallen children while supporting families with children currently deployed.
Staff Sgt. Nicholas Reid, born and raised in Brockport, was killed in 2012 while trying to disarm an IED in a small village in Afghanistan. “It was on his second deployment that we lost him, it was something that he was passionate about and he probably would have gone through and done the 20 years before retiring,” his mother Dorothy Reid tells News10NBC.
Dorothy is now the President of the New York branch of American Gold Star Mothers. She has looked to many Gold Star moms since her son died for comfort, strength and purpose. “Once you’re a part of an organization you don’t really want to be a part of, then you get to meet others who are part of it too and it helps the grief process immensely” Reid says.
With tensions continuing to rise in the Middle East and a war with Iran, the Gold Star mothers are focused on supporting Blue Star mothers — those who have children actively serving. “It makes you pause and you stop and you think and then you pray for all those that are out there and for all those that are deployed,” Reid says. “We have Blue Star mothers with children all over the world so, you’re there to support them, again it’s the support of our active military duty.”
The Gold Star moms also spend time with and write to terminally ill veterans, pack and send care packages to active-duty military members, provide emotional support to bereaved families and support a number of other community initiatives.
The hope is that the sacrifices that have gotten America to its 250th birthday will be enough to keep any further names off the monuments at Highland Park that the moms visited today.
“Freedom is not free and it’s the land of the free because of the brave, I know they say it’s cliché, but when you really stop to think about what it means to get there, that’s where we are,” Reid says.
The Gold Star moms will be joining a number of other veterans’ groups to clean and spruce up the memorials at Highland Park before the lilac festival. If you’d like to participate, volenteers can come to Highland Park on May 2nd at 8am.
