Police released new details on what led to a woman’s tragic death in a fatal boating accident at a popular area on Lake Geneva this week.
According to the Fontana police and fire departments, first responders were called around 8 p.m. Thursday to Gordy’s Marine at 320 Lake St. for “a water rescue.”
There, they discovered a 57-year-old woman had fallen off a “motorized watercraft while it was performing a docking maneuver” and became entangled in its propeller.
According to the Wisconsin DNR, a boat carrying three people was docking on Lake Geneva in Fontana when the woman fell off and was struck by the boat.
Emergency responders said they were able to free the woman from the propeller but she was pronounced dead at the scene.
Lt. Drew Starch said the woman was a Wisconsin resident. No other people were injured.
Authorities said alcohol was not believed to be a contributing factor and criminal charges have not been filed.
The incident remained under investigation Friday, however, with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources.
It comes just days after boating season in Lake Geneva began.
